Okay, I've decided to try this out for the month of November, which is great for potential sponsors because that is the month Henry will be born, with a high predicted traffic rate! To kick things off, I will be giving away one ad spot for free, which I'll discuss at the bottom of this post.

Here's how ad space on my blog will work:

I currently average 3,176 views a day (as of this very moment) with a little over 22,200 views per week (multiply that to get my monthly average of 88,800 per month)...and this number is consistently growing. I know this blog will never, ever turn into some crazy sponsor fueled ad space, so as long as I keep Sometimes Sweet true to me I see no harm in moving forward with this.

Apesar da aceitação nas empresas, alguns estigmas ainda continuam. Entenda como chefes e corporações veem os tatuados hoje.

Desde quando o capitão James Cook registrou em seu diário de bordo a onomatopeia "tattow", som feito pela fina agulha de osso na pele, até os dias de hoje, a tatuagem ganhou muitos rótulos. A mística de que tatuagem é uma coisa ruim começa na Idade Média, quando a igreja Católica - sempre ela - baniu a prática por considerá-la demoníaca e que vandalizava o corpo, propriedade de Deus. Já na Inglaterra do século XIX, a tatuagem era uma forma de identificar criminosos, bem como acontecia com os judeus na Alemanha nazista. A questão é que o tempo passou e nós sabemos que judeus não são ladrões e que tatuagem não é um estigma de vida incorreta. É uma forma de arte. Ainda que nas prisões de hoje a tatuagem seja uma forma de identificar grupos de criminosos, fora delas a tatuagem é a demonstração de uma personalidade, de uma cultura ou de um estado de espírito. E identifca grupos, também. Há estilos para todos os gostos.

Umas das grandes discussões em torno das tattoos é a aceitação profissional do tatuado. Em um dos episódios do programa Polícia 24 Horas, da Rede Bandeirantes, um dos "enquadrados" disse que vendia drogas pois não conseguia arrumar emprego por causa de suas tatuagens. Ao mesmo tempo, este redator aqui já viu um gerente de banco com o pescoço todo tatuado. Minha vó diz que tatuagem é "coisa de malandro". Então, propõe-se a pergunta: afinal de contas, tatuagem define caráter no mundo corporativo? Segundo alguns especialistas em Recursos Humanos, a tatuagem hoje não é mais uma marca de rebeldia. No entanto, ainda há de se ter bom senso, pois, apesar do afrouxamento no estigma, alguns ambientes corporativos exigem mais "sobriedade" que outros.

O que se vê hoje é que o impacto que uma tatuagem causa em um ambiente de trabalho depende do setor, do cargo ou até mesmo do perfil do chefe. Segundo Rodrigo Costa, gerente de recrutamento da Jonhson & Johnson, "em geral, tatuagem não define caráter. A maioria das empresas hoje não se importa com uma tatuagem ou outra, desde que sejam discretas. Alguns ramos (como propaganda e música, para citar os exemplos mais óbvios) aceitam maior "abuso" e tatuagens mais aparentes, enquanto outros (como um escritório de advocacia) são mais rígidos". A tatuagem transformou-se em um indicativo de personalidade da mesma forma que maneira de falar e de se movimentar também o são, mas não é definitivo para rotular uma pessoa. Ou seja, independentemente de quantos rabiscos você tenha no corpo, o que vale é a sua capacidade de produzir. As empresas, apesar de serem mais receptivas com tatuados, ainda tentam manter uma certa linha em alguns departamentos. "As tatuagens visíveis é que geram polêmicas. Pequenas tatuagens, discretas e/ou partes do corpo que ficam cobertas no horário comercial passam despercebidas", diz Lubiana Prates, analista de Recursos Humanos de uma grande empresa.

Para que não haja confusão, podemos estabelecer algumas diretrizes em função de determinadas profissões. Se o seu futuro é dentro de uma indústria, como uma usina ou uma sala-forno, é preferível que suas tatuagens sejam mais escondidas (costas, peito, pernas) para que não cause choque ou distrações durante o trabalho. Departamentos onde profissionais entram em contato com diferentes tipos de pessoas, como escritórios de advocacia ou vendas, recomenda-se também que não haja tatuagens muito visíveis. A questão aqui, deve-se deixar bem claro, não é de preconceito. A questão é que esses departamentos são microssociedades que tem as suas próprias regras. Da mesma forma que em uma sociedade não se deve andar nu, dentro de uma microssociedade, como um escritório de advogados, tatuagens berrantes dissonam do status quo.

De acordo com Rodrigo Costa, o melhor termômetro para não causar nenhum transtorno em ambientes corporativos é o bom senso. Tatuagens ofensivas e preconceituosas, obviamente, não são bem vindas em lugar algum, mas, dentro de uma empresa, uma tatuagem funciona como uma vestimenta. Se não há exageros, não há problema. Nenhuma empresa tem uma política sobre o assunto, o que faz com que a decisão de ter ou contratar uma pessoa tatuada cabe tão somente ao tipo de chefe que está lá. Também não há registros de empresas que barraram funcionários por causa de suas tatuagens, nem pediram para que um candidato tirasse a roupa para mostrar o que por ventura tenha escondido.

A bem da verdade é que hoje a tatuagem se tornou mais regra do que exceção. É muito difícil ver uma pessoa que não tenha uma. É por esta mudança no comportamento da sociedade que as empresas acabam por ser mais condescendentes, pois as probabilidades de achar um funcionário que tenha boa índole, seja um bom profissional e não tenha um "rabisquinho" são pequenas. Sabemos que tatuagem não muda caráter, mas também não podem ser um estandarte em um profissional, dependendo da carreira que queira seguir. "Caso haja um lugar onde isso [ser tatuado] pode ser ruim, é importante pensar: será que é um lugar onde você gostaria de trabalhar? Às vezes, não ser aprovado é uma bênção disfarçada", completa Rodrigo.

Renata Campos, 25 anos, advogada

Sofri preconceito uma única vez, pois sou da área jurídica, onde a tatuagem é muito mal vista. Mesmo tendo uma tatuagem nas costas, onde qualquer blusa esconde, ouvi críticas e me aconselharam a não fazer mais e, se possível, removê-la, pois na carreira jurídica é um "impedimento". Porém, hoje, depois de quase 3 anos desse episódio, posso afirmar que o preconceito não estava na minha área de atuação e sim na cabeça dessas pessoas. Estou indo pra segunda tatuagem, e não tenho mais problemas com isso.

Nunca sofri preconceito por causa das tatuagens, talvez porque elas não aparecem devido ao traje social que uso para trabalhar diariamente. A apresentação pessoal é muito importante no ramo em que atuo, com restrições até para cor de esmalte de unha, por exemplo. Acredito que sofreria preconceito ou até mesmo receberia advertências se mostrasse as tatuagens durante o expediente.

Sou designer freelancer, portanto, não tenho um ambiente corporativo de trabalho. Tenho um home-office onde clientes me visitam ou outros onde eu mesmo visito. Por minha tatuagem não ficar tão à mostra assim (está na parte superior do braço esquerdo), nunca observei algo relativo a isso. No entanto, por lidar com uma porção artística em meu trabalho - e, frequentemente ter artistas como clientes - creio que não haveria qualquer situação constrangedora ou discriminatória nesse aspecto.

O traço "estourou"

Tatuo há pouco mais de dois anos, estou sempre procurando aperfeiçoamento, mas de vez em quando tenho problemas com traços que "estouram".

Qual pode ser a causa?

Na hora em que termino o trabalho fica bom, mas dias depois vejo que o traço fica irregular, com algumas partes grossas.

October is finally here!

Thank you all SO much for all the kind words about our big move! It's hard for me on blogger, I wish so badly I could hit reply on each comment and talk to each person separately, kind of like on livejournal. Wouldn't that be great? Because I can't do that, I always worry that you all don't know that I read and cherish every single comment that I receive. So you know: I do! I love receiving your input, and I appreciate all of your sweetness and support so very much. I've been incredibly busy lately, so I haven't had the most time to blog the past few days, but now that we are settled I am back to my normal routine and I couldn't be happier! Blogging is such an outlet for me, and without it I do feel a little lost, as weird as that may sound. So if you're a regular follower, you'd know that my life has been quite busy, and so full of change. I really need to make a belly photo post soon to show you all just how BIG I've gotten, so hopefully this weekend I will be able to do just that. And speaking of this weekend, my baby shower is on Saturday! I can't wait. So many of my girlfriends are coming in from all sorts of different places and I'm so excited to see all of them. It's bizarre because it really does feel like my bridal shower was just yesterday, when in reality it was almost three years ago! And now, I'm planning my sister's bridal shower. How did that happen? Every once and a while I am shocked into the realization that time has in fact gone by, and that it's gone by so quickly. As always it's a reminder to just stop and take it all in. As Henry's arrival gets closer and closer, I am thinking about this all of the time. I know it's going to be an interesting transition- going from working as a teacher to becoming a full time mama and homemaker...and it's going to be hard! However, I feel like those late nights and sleepless times, rough patches and whatever else comes- that's LIFE! And all of those times will only be here for a short time, so my goal is to really be in the moment and live each of these things as they happen, without hoping and wishing for the next "thing" to come along so quickly. We only get one go-round at having our first child, so I want it all, the good, the bad, the hard and the easy. I'm ready for it, and really excited too.

I posted a few quick photos of the moving process the other day and briefly mentioned that my Dad and Hank had put together some of Henry's baby furniture. So far the crib and his changing table is done and in his room. We still have a long way to go, including painting, but I find myself wandering in there now and again, just thinking about him and what this whole adventure is going to be like. It's truly surreal. I thought it was crazy when I was 12, 16, 24 weeks. But now that we are about a month and a half away it's just mind blowing that we have such little time before he is born.

Outside of baby talk, everything else is moving along well. Work this year has been wonderful. These are the best group of kids I've ever had, and not a day goes by that I don't count myself as lucky for having such wonderful students during this eventful time. They're so supportive and cute, and make my day everyday. Besides being beyond exhausted almost every moment, I've been enjoying my time in the classroom. My last day is coming up quickly and I have about twenty-something more days to go!

I'm also currently really, really excited about Fall. To get into the spirit, Hank and I are going to be starting a Halloween movie marathon pretty soon here via Netflix. Some of our top picks:

There's seriously nothing I love more than snuggling up on the couch with a bowl of buttery, salty popcorn and enjoying a semi-scary movie. Note that I said SEMI because I'm a huge baby and can't handle the gory modern movies they have out these days. I'm more of a fan of the older stuff, especially Alfred Hitchcock and classic horror films, and then of course the more child-like ones too. Do you have any favorite Halloween time/creepy movies? So, today is Friday and the first day of my favorite month, October! It's a half day for me, and I can't wait to decorate a bit for Halloween when I get home from work. I'm also looking forward to getting the house a little more put together in preparation for friends coming into town. We have a LONG way to go as far as decorating, but it's coming along slowly but surely.

The Queen of Clams

One year ago today, I posted about meeting a couple of Kansas City burlesque performers outside of Penn Station (recalled here).

Since then, I had the pleasure of meeting another local performer, Legs Malone, and documenting one of her tattoos here.

Coincidentally, I am sharing here today, a tattoo on the ankle of one Miss Clams Casino.

It would be one thing if I was catching these performers in their natural habitats of burlesque shows, but my encounter with Clams was so fleeting, I was fortunate enough to snap a photo and take her card.

A brief ride on the F train (two stops only) afforded me enough time to spot a tattoo above her ankle, introduce myself and take a picture before necessity required I transfer to the R train.

So, here's the tattoo that so intrigued me:

As I mentioned previously, I barely had time to snap a photo, let alone get the story behind this cool tattoo. Thankfully, Miss Clams Casino was generous enough to send me the story at a later date:

"Every year I go to the Burlesque Hall of Fame weekend in Las Vegas and play in the official Burlesque Hall of Fame Poker Tournament. I enjoy poker, but I know that I'm probably not going to win, so I like setting little goals for the game with fabulous rewards...in 2009 I decided that if I won a hand with a pair of Queens I would get a tattoo to mark the occasion. Long story short, a few hands in I was dealt a pair of Queens and won the only hand I won that tournament. A few months later, my friend Scarlet Sinclair was getting started as a tattoo artist and was looking for willing guinea pigs. I told her the story and that I'd like some ink involving Queens and hearts and she came up with this incredible design. I went to see her at Matt's Tribal Dragon Tattoo in Bethpage, NY and was her 7th tattoo ever. She's incredible and I love the queen living on my ankle."
