Tattoo Tuesday V.64

Name/blog name: Ari Oh (no seriously, that’s my whole name) // aryeo.tumblr.com

Age: 20

Occupation:
Coffee bar manager, photographer, and graphic designer

Age of first tattoo: 18

Favorite tattoo: I don’t want to cop-out, but I don’t know that I could pick a favorite. What’s really cool is they all serve such different purposes and garner completely different reactions. I have a unique fondness for each of them.

Featured tattoo/location: Being the largest and most colorful tattoo I have, my half-sleeve gets a lot of comments and attention. It’s a girl in a row boat with the words “Bold is the heart that steers her through the night.”

Artist/shop/location of feature tattoo:
I got my half-sleeve done by the wonderful Dusty Neal at New Republic Tattoo in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He’s an amazing artist.

 1) Tell us about your featured tattoo- is there a background story or special meaning? Why did you choose this particular piece of art?

The inspiration for the tattoo came from a novel called “A Hero of Our Time” by Mikhail Lermontov. The main character hears “an odd tune, slow and melancholy, then quick and lively” coming from a young girl that he described as “a veritable mermaid”:

“Tall ships sail o’er the deep green ocean,
White sails set on the billowy wave.
My little boat sails there with the tall ships,
Sails has she none, just her two good oars.
Storm winds will blow and the old tall ships
Will lift their wings and fly over the sea.
Then I’ll curtsey and beg so humbly:
‘Have pity on my boat, oh wicked sea.
Precious are the goods that my boat carries,
Bold is the heart that steers her through the night.’”

She’s a mysterious girl, wild and elusive, with bright and penetrating eyes that have a magnetic power. I felt like Lermontov was describing me (or at least the girl I dare to think I am). Plus, the meaning of the passage is truly inspiring- I may not have the means that others have, the sea of life may try to drown me, but my heart is strong and it will guide me through.

2) Do you have any other tattoos?  If so, what do you have and where?

My first tattoo is an Oscar Wilde line from “Lady Windermere's Fan": “We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.” For me personally, it meant that we all face hardships and challenges in life, but we can still have dreams and follow our hearts. It’s the one on my ribs. When I was at the shop, all the artists were like, “This is your first one?? Going big, huh?” I was nervous, but the worst part was when the guy with his entire skull tattooed told me I was crazy. Dude, your head is tattooed. I’m the sane one.

My mom and I went and got matching stars tattooed on our wrists together. Ever since I was little, my mom called my brother, sister, and I her sun, moon, and star. I was the star. She painted stars on my walls when I was little, drew stars on my Christmas presents, and called me “her star”.

I have a piece on my left wrist and surprisingly few people understand the reference, which is both kind of fun and also slightly depressing about my generation. It says “A New Hope” and the emblem in the center is the Jedi emblem! I love love love Star Wars (especially the old trilogy) and kind of spontaneously decided to get it done, but I don’t regret it in the least.

On the side of my right hand, I got my dog’s name, Windsor, tattooed on the day he died. I grew up with that boy. We got him when I was seven years old and he lived for thirteen wonderful years before passing away of natural causes. Growing up is hard and he loved me more every day, regardless of what changes I went through. I always say I loved him more than I like most people.

3) Do you plan on getting more?

I will definitely be getting more. I have plans for a Deftones-related tattoo, the word “Wildflower” on the side of my left hand for my mom, and I’m playing with some other ideas as well.

4) How do your family and friends feel about your tattoo(s)?  Have you run into any adversity or negativity because of them?

My mom was a little wary of the first one, but she’s been really supportive through all of them once she got used to the idea of me permanently changing the body she gave birth to, which I think is a very valid concern. And my friends have all been really cool about it as well, which is an advantage of being a part of my generation. We tend to be more open-minded about it than older generations and view it as body art rather than this thing associated with guys who would go off to war and get their buddy to tattoo them with something vulgar or violent. Mostly people are just interested and ask me what they mean. I have been the subject of some sidelong glances and whispered conversations, but nothing outright.

5) Any advice for those interested in getting tattooed but haven't gotten one yet?

I think you should understand that you’ll get a lot of advice from a lot of different sources, but the most important thing is that you should establish your own personal beliefs about tattoos and take everything else with a grain of salt. Just decide how you feel rather than trying to feel how you think you're supposed to feel, which goes for everything else in life too. Follow your heart and be brave.

First dibs...

My little MBMJ diaper bag family

I have been going back and forth about this for awhile, but I've decided to sell my Marc by Marc Jacobs diaper bags. Why, you ask? Quite simply, I don't use them enough and lately I've been all about getting rid of things I don't use regularly to make space for either good old fashioned space...or new things. They are really darling bags though, and rare (I believe they aren't even made/sold anymore). My intention is to list them on eBay, but I thought I would mention them here first in case anyone was interested.

I couldn't resist!

They are the "Totally Turnlock" Baby Bag and an old listing can be seen here on Nordstrom with dimension/size information.

The black bag has been used a total of 5 or so times and is in perfect condition. The camel colored bag has never been used, and still has its tags attached with wrapped hardware.

I am asking $375 for the black bag and $425 for the camel, with $15 insured shipping per bag.  I take paypal and will ship immediately upon payment.

So, let me know! I can provide more photos of course, so email me at sometimessweetblog@gmail.com. If no one is interested here I will go ahead and list them on eBay where I'm expecting they will sell immediately.

Thanks guys!
xo

THE perfect baby bag...

p.s. I feel kind of odd using this blog to sell things so if you're interested, hurry up and email me before I change my mind and delete this ;)

Music Monday: 12 favorite spring time songs

it was a beautiful day!
{Amber and me, last spring- enjoying our beautiful downtown}

It has been just lovely up here in Northern Arizona, and with this beautiful weather always comes the urge to do a few things: ride my bicycle, lay outdoors in the green grass...and listen to spring-esque music, like the songs I've gathered below!

Earlier today I also mentioned my love for French music on Twitter, and a French reader of mine (Hi Marjorie) emailed me and recommended the lovely Emilie Simon, who you can find below. Enjoy. And happy, happy spring to you and yours!

a little laugh for your Sunday

"Myspace photo"

I really love imagining that Henry grabbed my camera and took this himself- for his Myspace profile, of course. So many captions could go with this photo, but I think the best is "hey ladies." hahaha! I love my little (myspace-picture-taking) man.

Happy Sunday!

What are you afraid of?

 photo 1
{me, this morning- smiling and clearly pre-near-death pigeon experience.}

Today while walking downtown with a friend of mine, a pigeon flew up and swooped down, dangerously close to our heads...and almost gave me a heart attack. Yup, I'm scared of birds. Oddly enough we had the sweetest cockatiel growing up and I don't remember ever being afraid of her, but as time went on I found myself shuddering when a crow would come hopping along the sidewalk, or I'd see a mass of seagulls at the beach. I attribute this fear to two things: one, watching Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds too many times, too young...and two, turkey vultures.  If you don't know what a turkey vulture (aka a buzzard) is, google it, but I promise you, it ain't pretty. My Mom taught at an elementary school that had a large soccer field in the front area, and turkey vultures used to sit atop the goal posts everyday. The adults would tell us to never, ever, ever lay down on the ground for fear the vultures would think we were food and swoop down and attack us. Really adults? You want to tell impressionable seven year olds that huge birds with up to a six foot wingspan might attack us? Whether they would in fact, fly down and think we were prey is up for discussion, but regardless, it terrified me. And I am still scared to this day. Pigeons, crows, seagulls, woodpeckers...heck, even bluebirds scare the living daylights out of me and I WILL cross to the other side of the street if I see a gaggle of particularly menacing geese down by the pond. Not even kidding.

So with that said, I am so curious: what scares you? Do you have a fear, rational or irrational? I have a friend who is terrified of cowboy hats, another who is scared of the ocean, and an ex-boyfriend who didn't like the feel of soap (that relationship ended quickly, haha). But really, I'm curious!

If you'd like, share your fears below, or post about them and link me back here. This should be interesting!

Friday links to love (and a couple blog-related items)

happy baby

Whoa...Friday, already? I feel like I just gathered together links for last week's post. However, I am not one to complain about a weekend, so here we are! This weekend should be a great one- Hank is recording with one of his bands, family is in town, and Adie and I have a bit of a movie night planned. I'm feeling really inspired, and that "spring" feeling is all around- everything feels like it's renewing itself, including me!

And speaking of things being fresh and new, there are going to be some tiny changes coming to this little blog of mine. A couple new, super exciting projects/features (one this month, one next month as Slice of and Mama Said wind down), and also a change in how I do ads. This month I will be doing the final "large" giveaway, and in the future focusing on one to two separate ones, both from me and from sponsors. This month I'll be introducing that concept into the mix, with an additional two giveaways in the next couple of weeks- one fashion related, one food related this time! This change also allows me to put my sponsor money back into my blog and do my own giveaways in the future. I NEVER want this blog to be all about ads or prizes, and I just don't like doing my own in addition to a whole huge one from my amazing sponsors- I've done it before but it really gets too cluttered. So if you're someone who is interested in hosting a giveaway here, I'm absolutely open to the idea, but I do have a waiting list so please get in contact with me asap if you'd like to work with Sometimes Sweet in that capacity. I LOVE treating my readers to fun things so feel free to email me.

And while we are on the topic of blog-related items, please check out my "Blogs I Love" page. I'm STILL updating it, but I have the bulk of it done so definitely check out each of them- they're all very inspiring and wonderful. Don't forget to check out all my new sponsors in my sidebar too!

Also- on Monday I'll be publishing a post about how-to plan a meet up in YOUR area, written by Kelsey, Chelsea and myself...so keep you eyes peeled!

And in the meantime, here are some links to check out-

Dena's how-to on planting succulents is great!

Blueberry yogurt cake? Whoa...

This blog is a new favorite of mine. What a doll!

Even though Henry will attend public school, the extremely insightful comments on my friend James' post are really interesting!

Check out an interview I did over on Polly's blog the other day.

Lauren recommended a neat-looking book and I'm definitely excited to check it out.

So- I love pie, and I love Chelsea...so this post was right up my alley.

Ashley is another new favorite blog (thank you AZ Blogger Meetup), and I am dying over her outfit here. Kate Spade is one of my faves.

Leigh-Ann's style/inspiration board is inspiring me too, all the way from Canada! So cute.

Two of my favorites pairing up: Megan on Emily's blog! Awesome.

Susannah has a great new feature that's definitely worth a read.

Two other ladies are putting together meet ups in their states: Missouri and Texas.

Luggage tags for readers- if only they came in more titles!

Jessica and family took a fun vacation and their photos make me want to take one too!

I am loving this fabric.

Lauren's roundup of little baby shoes is too cute! I have started getting into buying tiny shoes for Henry and it's kind of addictive.

Okay. I am obsessed with organization and obsessed with this freebie! Thank you, thank you!

If I was decorating for Easter I'd absolutely do this DIY. All sorts of adorable, and cheap/easy too!

This dress, in my closet, now please! These shorts too. Thanks.

And finally, I leave you with this little piece of amazing-ness. Scroll down and watch the workout video. You can thank me later!
