Little boys are made of...

favorite mug

Okay. So at first when I found out we were having a boy a slight, tiny, mini little disappointment went through me ONLY because I adore all things girly, baby girl clothing, girl toys, etc. All along I wanted a boy first, but when this secret wish actually came true and my family and I hightailed it over to Target to buy Baby H's first items of boy clothing, I may or may not have lingered in the little girl's section for too long. AND I may or may not have shed a tiny tear for the mini-watermelon bathing suit that wouldn't work for our little guy, the adorable ruffly yellow dress that caught my eye, or the extremely girly pink rainboots that would never be (at least not yet!). This disappointment lasted for just a moment, and it was completely silly, and quickly dissipated. Now I couldn't be more excited about all of the absolutely darling little boy options my friends and I have found for Henry to wear, and I always have a great time shopping for him even though he isn't even here yet!

Just today H.'s Auntie Amber (visit her blog here- http://amberjoyh.blogspot.com/) sent over a link to what might just be my most favorite selection of little boy clothing I've ever seen (with the exception of my "favoritest," J. Crew's Crewcuts!) via the wonderful Zara. I just had to share the cuteness with all of you! To see the entire lookbook, visit Zara at this link and take a peek! And also feel free to click the photos to view them in a larger size.

CUTE, huh?! The girl's lookbook is pretty darling too. Have you seen any super adorable little boys clothing lately? If so, feel free to share the link in the comments!

Sara's Psalm Speaks to the Desires of Her Heart

I met Sara on the 36th Street subway platform in Brooklyn last month during the late afternoon rush hour commute.

What can I say? I'm a sucker for words and this tattoo looked poetic:

Sara filled me in. She has three tattoos and this passage "spoke to her". She wanted something religious for her 30th birthday.

This is an excerpt (verse 4) from Psalm 37 in the Bible.

The verse reads "Delight thyself also in the Lord, and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart" [King James Version]. Sara changed the thee and thine to read me and my, respectively, making the verse more personal.

This was tattooed by Alex Franklin at Brooklyn Ink in Bay Ridge. Work from Brooklyn Ink (and much from Alex) can be seen on this Tattoosday label here.

Thanks to Sara for sharing her source of inspiration with us here on Tattoosday!

Tattoo Tuesday V.36: Couples Edition!

This week I thought it would be fun to try something new and feature a couple, in this case a darling husband and wife duo named Nicole and Rob. I'm super excited to present these two as our first Tattoo Tuesday couple, and I think you guys will definitely enjoy reading this extra-long, chock full of photos post! Be sure to check out Ms. Nicole's blog, linked below, and see hello. Happy Tattoo Tuesday!

Name and blog name: Nicole Organ Highway 101 - http://highway101today.blogspot.com

Age: 25

Occupation: HRIS specialist at the National Renewable Energy Lab

Age of first tattoo: 18

Favorite tattoo: Diamonds on my feet

Featured tattoo/location: Underwater 3/4 sleeve on left arm

Artist/shop/location of feature tattoo: Jen Mathiesen, Mantra, Lakewood, CO

1) Tell us about the tattoo you are sharing with us- is there a background story or special meaning? Why did you choose this particular piece of art?

My husband made me an appointment to start my sleeve as a birthday present, back in 2008. I decided to start with a shoulder cap of flowers, with an anchor in the center. Not much meaning behind it, I just wanted something feminine. I also really liked the idea of the anchor as a sign of stability and foundations, since my husband and I were getting married later that year.

It took me a while to decide what to do under that. I had been thinking about a California-themed piece, but I couldn't visualize a way to make it flow with the shoulder cap. Eventually I settled on an underwater theme, which basically symbolizes my love for all things aquatic. I have an octopus (said to represent creativity and flexibility, which I appreciate), a ship in a bottle, and a mermaid with red hair (I love mermaids). The piece was all hand-drawn by my artist.

2) Do you have any other tattoos?

I have several tattoos on my back, including a skull and crossbones on my upperback, a star with swirled green and purple, a sparrow, and a horseshoe. And of course diamonds my feet.

3) Do you plan on getting more?

Yes, definitely. My last piece took several months to complete and I took the summer off from tattooing, otherwise I would already have more by now. The next one I have planned is a pair of swallows (cliche, I know) that were on my wedding invitations. I also have plans for a pin-stripe tattoo, a large family piece, and other various smaller tattoos. The areas that I really want to focus on now are my hips, legs, and chest.

4) How do your family and friends feel about your tattoo(s)? Have you run into any adversity or negativity because of them?

My parents were not happy at first, but now are some of my biggest supporters. I still think they would have preferred my tattoo-free, but it doesn't bother them anymore, and in fact my mother now has an appreciation and respect for tattoo art.. My in-laws have been a little slower to accept it, but it's not really an issue these days. Most of friends are tattooed.

I work in a pretty conservative industry, but mostly my tattoos are looked at as a novelty and no one has been negative. I try to keep covered as much as possible when I am in the office. I get more comments and dirty looks when I am out at dinner! I waited until I had a stable career before getting more visable tattoos.

5) Any advice for those interested in getting tattooed but haven't gotten one yet?

Make sure you are comfortable with your shop and your artist. It's nice to feel like you are hanging out with a friend rather than completing a business transaction (a mistake a made with my first few tattoos). Also, while I wouldn't say anyone should get a tattoo on a whim, don't feel pressured to pick something that has deep sentimental value to you, just get something you are going to love. Also, don't let anyone talk into something you don't want, but it is worthwhile to ask your artist's opinion. They've been doing it a long time and can recognize an idea that sounds great but may not translate to skin well.

And now, onto Rob!

Name and blog name: Rob Organ, no blog

Age: 25

Occupation: Gearhead, Husband and Dog wrangler

Age of first tattoo: 22

Favorite tattoo: The awesome ones (all of them)

Featured tattoo/location: 1940s/1950s California/automotive sleeve, right arm

Artist/shop/location of feature tattoo: Chris Yaws/Mantra Tattoo/ Lakewood, CO

1) Tell us about the tattoo you are sharing with us- is there a background story or special meaning? Why did you choose this particular piece of art?

Since I eat, sleep, and breathe cars, there was no questions what the theme of my sleeve would be, just how I was going to incorporate it all. I found images and ideas I liked, brought it to my artist, and he made magic on my arm. American traditional tattoos are really popular, and while I like them, I wanted to go in a different direction. We decided to do a realistic black and gray. The top car is a '3 Oldsmobile, and on the bottom is '6 Ford. I also have several vintage Oldsmobile icons because I have two Olds Rockets. The Highway 101 sign is a reference to the first song my wife and I danced to at our wedding (Highway 101 by Social Distortion). There also vintage parts and tools scattered about.

2) Do you have any other tattoos? If so, what do you have and where?

I have Sailor Jerry piece on my back and the words "' gonna live before I die"on my chest. The script on my chest was my first tattoo, and both the S.J. and the script was done by Jen Mathias at Mantra Tattoo.

3) Do you plan on getting more?

Yeah,I plan on on getting my other arm done and I have a bunch more ideas.

4) How do your family and friends feel about your tattoo(s)? Have you run into any adversity or negativity because of them?

My parents were not happy at first, but now they are pretty used to it. Most of my friends either are tattooed or don' care. "f you don' think you have the balls enough to wear a tattoo, don' get one, but don' try to make excuses for yourself, by knocking the fellow who does!"Sailor Jerry Collins

5) Any advice for those interested in getting tattooed but haven't gotten one yet?

Have fun, be creative, and be picky about your artist.

Khalil's Organic Biomechanical Arm

One thing regular readers may notice is that I tend to prefer singular tattoos, as opposed to larger "concept" pieces. This preference is what you see illustrated here on Tattoosday.

However, once in a while, I see work  that, although atypical of our content, is irresistible.

Just check out Khalil's sleeve, which I captured one day after work in Penn Station:

Representing thirty-two hours of work by Mike Boissoneault at Black Lotus Tattoo Studios, in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, Khalil explained that this vision represents a spin on a biomechanical design, "but more organic".

To him, in a world in which people are becoming less human, this tattoo reminds him to be human.

Here's a "fresher" shot from the Black Lotus website:

Music Monday: 16 albums, 16 songs

I thought I would continue my sporadic Music Monday postings today by putting together a little playlist that includes 16 songs from 16 of my all-time favorite albums. Ideally I've chosen my very favorite songs from each but unfortunately some of them aren't featured on playlist.com. I've made do though, and picked my next favorite song to share. I also made a fancy little collage of all the album covers. So, here you go. Happy Music Monday everyone!

Christina's Owl and Lighthouse

I met Christina one day after work while walking outside of Madison Square Garden.

She had this incredible tattoo, which she gladly shared with us here on Tattoosday:

This tattoo that covers her upper left arm was actually done in two segments by artist Orrin Hurley, who currently tattoos at Dare Devil Tattoo in Manhattan.

As for the source material behind this beautiful tattoo, Christina chose a piece of art by Frances Olive Esme Eve:

A closer look at the tattooed owl shows how it was changed, but you can still see that there is still a lot from the original design:

The lighthouse was inspired by the Portland Head Light on Cape Elizabeth, Maine.

Thanks to Christina for sharing her tattoo with us here on Tattoosday.

Happy Sunday: Shopping list, V.1

Sundays are one of my all-time favorite days of the week. My parents really love Sundays and they've kind of passed that down to my sister and myself. Every Sunday morning they get coffee and tea together, and then do all their food shopping for the week at Trader Joe's and Sprouts, and sometimes Whole Foods too. Whenever Hank and I are in town we always go with them, and it's really fun to have this weekly tradition to look forward to. When we're up here at home, we usually do similar things, although with his current schedule it makes it a little hard. But Sundays to me are for getting ready for the next week, planning meals and solidifying schedules, and getting an overall sense of balance before the next week begins. I've written about this before, but Mondays always feel like a bit of a restart to me. I use Sundays to plan for this new week, and on Monday, no matter what happened the previous week, I can restart and have a fresh beginning.

Today I will be going food shopping, so I thought I would make a post of some of the "must-haves" I always get. I'm not going to include fresh veggies or fruits here because that list would be incredibly long, but I thought I would share a few of the special staple items that I've always loved and get every single week.

1) Ezekial bread products (especially the wraps!)

These products are some of my favorite things in the entire world! I eat at least one of their products a day. They're great for you, have a low glycemic index (which means they won't spike your blood sugar like many other "carb/bread type" items), they're organic, nutritionally-dense, and high fiber. They're also one of the few bread products out there that actually contain all 9 essential amino acids, low in fat, and contain no trans fat or cholesterol (nutritional info from various websites). I really enjoy their breads- especially the cinnamon raisin bread topped with almond butter and bananas, or just with plain butter as a treat- but they also offer a wide variety of other products as well. I am a huge fan of their English muffins- their cinnamon raisin is to die for, but their regular sprouted grains are great too. And then of course the wraps, which are one of my TOP five favorite food items (if you're curious, each HUGE wrap contains 150 cal, 4g fat, 6g protein, 5g fiber and 0g sugar!). You can buy these at your local health food store, in the the health food section of your regular grocer. Here are some ways I use their products:

Wraps: I love to make healthy pizzas on these. Simply use a toaster oven or regular oven, preheat it, and while it's getting warmed up take a tortilla and spread some tomato sauce on it. Then add tons of chopped up veggies, a bit of cheese if you eat dairy, top with a little sea salt, some nutritional yeast, oregano, whatever you want, and bake for a few minutes until the tortilla gets a little crispy. If you have cheese on it, just take it out once the cheese is melted! Slice it up and you have a super healthy pizza. So good. You can also make these pizzas using the Ezekial English muffins and they're delicious as well.

Here's an example of one my Ezekial pizzas- this one is extremely loaded with veggies so don't feel like you have to go that overboard! :)
today's yummy lunch

Then here's a regular cheese and broccoli I made for Hank-
super easy and delicious!

The wraps are also a delicious alternative to a typical tortilla or pita, and much healthier. You can use the wrap in place of regular bread for a sandwich, in place of chips for dips like hummus, or really for any use you can think of! My Mom loves to make bean burritos out of them- she simply fills up the wrap with beans and any other fillings she desires, folds it like a burrito, and cooks it in a pan on the stove top. Here's an example of a turkey sandwich I made using one:
dinner

I also love to use their bread as toast in the morning. It's SO filling, and truly delicious. I keep the bread in my freezer and toast them frozen. This way the huge loaf doesn't go bad. This particular breakfast I topped the toast with organic apple butter. Yum!
yet another food photo! yummy breakfast after my run

2) Quinoa (pronounced KEEN-wah)

I've posted about this wonderful, wonderful food numerous times, and with good reason, as it's a huge staple in our house. Quinoa is a bit of a super food, and is another complete protein item that contains all 9 essential amino acids. Compared to other grains, quinoa is higher in calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, iron, copper, manganese, and zinc than wheat, barley, or corn (from bodyecology.com). Although it isn't really a grain (it's a seed!), I think of it as being in the pasta family and that's typically how we eat it. It's extremely easy to cook. All of you have to do is add two parts liquid (water or broth) to every one part quinoa. So, if you wanted to cook 2 cups of quinoa, you'd add in 4 cups of water. You simply add all of it into the pot at once, and wait for the liquid to boil out. Fluff with your fork and wa-la, you're done! It's super easy and is a great pairing to most dishes. Like I mentioned you can cook this with broth or water, and add in whatever your heart desires. It's extremely delicious on it's own with just butter and sea salt, but it's also great as an Italian dish (we add in tons of peppers and veggies with tomato sauce after it's cooked), or in place of rice in a stir fry type dish.

Here I added in tofu, veggies, beans and my favorite spicy condiment, SRIRACHA!
yummy lunch before i head home! thanks mom!

I've also used it as a healthy way to make stuffed peppers-
quinoa stuffed peppers

and as a great base for quinoa tabouli!
homemade quinoa tabouli

You can buy this in the bulk section of your health food store/regular grocer, or some places like Trader Joe's have it packaged for you and ready to go.

3) Almond milk

Our family love love loves almond milk. Years ago when we first learned about the negative health implications of soy products we cut back a lot on not just our tofu consumption but gave up soy milk as well. If you're curious about the problems with soy, check out this link: http://www.naturalhealthstrategies.com/dangers-of-soy.html, but remember that just because I agree with it doesn't mean that you have to! There are a million websites and books out there that back this up, but I'm sure there are some that hold fast to the opposite side of the coin. Anyway, when we ditched the soy milk, we replaced it with delicious almond milk! There are many different brands, and different varieties within those brands, but our everyday staple is Almond Breeze's Unsweetened Vanilla.

It's really smooth and really delicious. I use it in my morning cereal, or to thicken up my oatmeal. It's a great alternative to soy milk, and definitely worth a try if you're curious. It comes in both unrefrigerated containers (be SURE to refrigerate once you open it), and also in a bigger pre-chilled milk carton type container you can find in your milk section! Even Walmart is carrying this product now and I've seen both packaging at our local one when I've had the misfortune of finding myself in that horrid place. ;)

Each cup of the kind we like (pictured above) has just 40 calories. It's creamy, but not thick at all. I wouldn't call it watery either, it's definitely a step above the consistency of skim milk. Be sure to get the unsweetened version though, so you can avoid any added sugars. Basically, it's an all-natural, non-dairy beverage made from real almonds. It's sugar-free and contains no artificial sweeteners. It's gluten, cholesterol & lactose free, an excellent source of calcium and vitamins D & E, and a good source of vitamin A (stats via hungry-girl). You can also use in in cooking, smoothies, and a million other recipes.

Here's a photo of delicious almond milk in my morning cereal-
breakfast, yum!

4) Greek yogurt!

Oh my gosh I love this stuff. It's so, so delicious but I will warn you right off the bat that is isn't for everyone. It's a LOT thicker than regular yogurt, and if you get the unsweetened, plain kind (my favorite), it has a very "plain yogurt" taste. There are many other types that have fruit added in, flavors, etc...but with those comes a lot of sugar so I really prefer to just get the regular and add in my own fruit! The neat part of Greek yogurt is how filling it is- it actually contains double the amount of protein than regular yogurt (typically 13-20g per container!), and is very low in calories, carbs, and due to the low-carbohydrate content there's less lactose which means it's easier to digest. You can use it in a variety of ways, but my favorite it just on its own, with fresh fruit!

greek yogurt and blackberries, breakfast of champions

5) Kashi products

I've been eating Kashi products forever and ever, and my favorite item would have to be their Go Lean cereal. However, if I'm not in the mood for cold cereal and instead want a hot and quick breakfast, but I don't have time to whip up some steel-cut oats, I reach for their instant oatmeal. Trust me when I tell you that this stuff is amazing. My FAVORITE flavor is the Go Lean Oatmeal with Honey and Cinnamon (see photo below) and that's the variety I'm going to recommend you try first if you've never had it before.

Here's how I make it: I use two packets, and empty them into a bowl. I then add in tons of fresh berries (typically blueberries and raspberries), and then some water as specified in the directions- less for thicker oatmeal, more for thinner. Then I pop it into the microwave for a minute, stir it, put it back in for another 30 seconds to a minute or so, then let it sit for a minute in there. When you take it out your oatmeal will be transformed into this amazingly delicious, piping hot breakfast that is seriously beyond scrumptious! The berries ooze into the grains, and I feel like it tastes like a huge bowl of pie. This stuff keeps me filled up for the entire morning and is incredibly healthy! Each packet has 150 cal and is loaded with fiber and protein. You don't have to use two packets but I like to so it fills me up.

perfect breakfast

These are just five of the many items we get every week, so let me know if you've found this interesting and if so I will continue to make little posts like this! I love food so much, and I love talking about it, blogging about it, etc. that I feel like I could write forever on this topic. And I do hope that you found something worthwhile here. Perhaps you found something new to try or a new idea for an old favorite, or maybe you just got excited about heading out to get some delicious food later today. Either way, thanks so much for stopping by, and happy grocery shopping!
