Formspring Sunday V.5 (the last one)

Sunday...

Thanks again for all of your great questions and comments. To view any of my other questions and answers, simply type in "formspring" to the search box! I didn't answer quite a few of them that I've already answered, so if you don't see your question use that search feature! I got so many this time, it's a little overwhelming but I am going to do my best to answer them. Hank's at work for another couple of hours and I have some free time while I'm watching The Grammys, so here we go...

for Formspring Sunday, V.5

My boyfriend recently has been told by some doctors that he needs to lose some weight, but LOVES food. He lives with two other boys and they mainly eat out or eat frozen foods. I don't live with him, but spend 75% of my time at his place, so how can I help him deal with this, without offending him or making him think I'm calling him "fat".

I wouldn't say anything to him. Lead by example. Just start cooking and eating really healthy meals around him, talk about how you're trying to make a positive change with yourself...but don't mention wanting to change him. I bet that in time he will want to be healthier, just from seeing you make these smart choices. If you already do that, then I would talk to him, but be sure to address it from a "health" point of view, rather than an aesthetic point of view so his feelings are spared as much as possible.

Thank you so much for answering all of our random questions so graciously! I had a question about teaching...I am considering going back to school to become a Middle School teacher, but before that I am thinking about taking some time to substitute teach. Do you have any thoughts/advice on substitute teaching? I am sure that you interact with them often!

Hmm...well I don't necessarily have advice on it, since I've never done it, but it seems like a great option for people who want a flexible schedule and don't need benefits. I like that it would be different everyday- new kids and environments, but at the same time I don't know how reliable it would be, especially since school districts (at least ours) are trying to cut down on employee absences due to financial issues in education. But if you're interested, I say go for it! :)

Hey Danielle! I was just wondering if you've heard of The Honeyman? Its this great local shop in Prescott, right on Gurley. They have tons of organic food, grains, and whathaveyou. If you haven't been, you should check it out.

I have driven by it many times, but I've never gone in. I will check it out this week! Thanks for the heads up!

Have you always taken a lot of photos of your life in a documentation sort of way even before you started blogging?

Oh yes. I've had a livejournal since the 90s and have always done this. I really, really adore being able to look back through everything.

I love your blog :) Have you ever read the book Skinny Bitch?

I have! I enjoyed it.

OH NO!? Your house is on fire! Everyone is out safe, but what would you run back in to save??

Our wedding guest book of photobooth photos, wedding album/dvd, all of my dresses...and Hank's vinyl toys because he'd be devastated.

Hello Danielle! I wanted to write you to thank you. I have been struggling with my body, self image for years now and suffering of anorexia as well. This week, I came across your blog and it has been a blessing... You are such a wonderful inspiration! In one week, I feel like I have felt better more than in the past few months and maybe years! Here s a list of a few thing that you helped me change: I decide to go for a healthy "diet"! i went to Trader Joe's today and picked up amazing good stuff you advised on your blog and I am going to follow the way you eat etc... you helped me accepting that I can go out wearing just a little bite of makeup and be just fine! You are so pretty by the way! You are helping accepting myself for who I am really, what I believe in and want to do with my life... I don't believe in God ever but being in this country ( I am from France originally) I always felt like I had to believe in it. And then I read your blog and what you think about it and this is exactly what I think as well! I love your style, clothes, purses, shoes and the most out of everything, your tattoos!!! Thank you for being such a great person, you truly helped and help me in my daily life, and I feel like your blog is my therapy... So thank you :)

WOW. I usually don't post the comments I get via formspring (just questions), but I had to post this and say thank you, whoever you are. It blows my mind everytime I get an email, comment, or message like this one. It flatters me to no end to know that ANYONE would want to read what I write, let alone find inspiration in my words. I appreciate you, and all of my readers...and thank you so much for reaching out and letting me know.

how many outfits do you own? how many pairs of shoes? how many bags?

I don't count items that I have! Sorry. :)

You have such pretty hair! What shampoo and conditioner do you use? Do you blow dry your hair? Are they wavy, curvy, or naturally straight? Xoxo

I use both Bumble & Bumble and Biolage products! I blowdry my hair only about 3x a week, whenever I wash it...and it's naturally very straight.

do you use an eye cream? and how long does it normally take for you to get dressed and ready in the morning, and ready for bed at night?

It takes me 1.5 hours to get ready for work! That's insane I know, but I like to dilly-dally and take my sweet time curling my hair, picking out my outfit, etc. When I have an event to get ready for, I prefer to take 2 hours or so. Again, I know this is crazy but I love to take my time. At night, it takes me about 15 min - brush teeth, floss, wash face, apply lotions and potions. And yes, I use an eye cream. I used to use Stri-Vectin (BEST) but I've recently switched to Lush's Enchanted eye cream.

Hi! What is the signification and neaning to you behind the word tattooed on your wrist? Just curious ;) Take care!

I just love the word and like having a reminder to take my time and think about things- reflect on things.

If you could go back in time and give your younger self some advice, what would it be?

Gosh. What a great question. I would say, without becoming too long winded here...to savor it and enjoy every last moment of everything. I think when we're younger we often are consumed with the "next" thing...whether that be the weekend, the summer, the next grade, college, spring break, after college. SLOW DOWN. You will only have the chance to do it once. I think back to when Hank and I got our first apartment. It was so incredibly tiny, and we slept on a twin bed together, in a closet-sized room, for a year. I remember how I couldn't wait to move into a bigger place, with more space...but in retrospect, those "hard" times are some of my fondest memories.

Do you read any magazines? Fashion, cooking, craft, decoration etc?

I read Oxygen (fitness mag), Real Simple, Martha Stewart Living, Natural Health, Lucky...and a handful of others. Those are my top favorites though!

you're beautiful and totally inspiring. what kind of books do you read with your classes? i've been considering becoming an english teacher, and i'm just curious to know what people have been teaching!

We read all sorts of things! As far as novels, I'm beginning Fahrenheit 451 with my sophomores in a few weeks.

how do you make "rounded corners" on your photos? :) xo

Picnik :)

Miss Danielle, What would be your favorite, or most memorable times as a child?

Here's part of a post I wrote on my childhood in October- click here to read it! :)

its in my fathers uppercase handwriting, that would be everywhere, reminding me he loved me, of my chores, of everything. it's the way a tomato vine smells that takes me back to my childhood home, memories of sitting in our backyard while my mother gathered vegetables from the garden, ice pops- frozen juice in plastic containers that were so much better than the store bought kind. it's visiting the pumpkin patch every year, straw getting into our jeans, the smell of hot apple cider, and the feeling of that crisp air biting at our rosy cheeks. it's homemade spaghetti sauce, meatballs simmering in the pot, thyme and oregano, crispy garlic bread that melted in your mouth when the butter was heated just so. it's hearing bruce springsteen, and elton john, wafting down and through through the house, the 8 track player alive and well in the family room, my mother dancing around while she cleaned, it's apple pie. it's spinach dip. it's pumpernickel bread. it's a hard roll with butter from glory's. it's the holidays and wandering through the attic, feeling so small amidst the big brown boxes. it's watching nickelodeon at my grandparents house, nanny bringing us cheese sandwiches on wonder bread. it's the big gray car we'd ride in, it's grandfathers friends and their hats, their jackets, their glasses. it's the jelly doughnut my he would buy from freeman's every morning- powdered sugar, that spongy cake, and gooey insides we devoured so quickly. it's dancing around on my parents bed to "crocodile rock," flashlights in hand, our make shift dance club seeming so magical to our small, small selves. it's the forts in the living room, jungle gym in the backyard, the big trees in the front. it's the sprinklers in the summer, it's going on walks in the woods, exploring and feeling like we were the only people around for miles. it's the clear, crisp mornings and the nights filled with lightning bugs. it's the library. it's being pulled around in a wagon, on the back on my mom's 10-speed, on my father's back. it's macaroni and cheese, it's tuna fish sandwiches at becky's. it's the smell of chlorine. it's the distinct feeling that everything was alright, the world was beautiful and everyone was good.

When you were "younger", did you picture yourself and your life as it is now, or was it something different?

I always had a "dream" life I hoped to live...and somehow, I am living it. I count my blessings everyday. So yes, this is exactly what I pictured and hoped life would be like.

Hello Danielle. I am attending NAU and this is my first year. What were some of your favorite things to do up here?

Well, in college I definitely liked to go out and have fun! My girlfriends and I would go out a lot, downtown to the bars, etc. The majority of my college "free time" was spent just being silly on campus or in the wing of our sorority, at the bars/parties, or out to eat (faves were Cafe Express, Mountain Oasis, Pita Pit - it was brand new then, or Black Bean). I LOVED college, and no matter what we were all doing, it was always fun. None of us were outdoorsy, so that aspect of Flagstaff didn't really appeal to us, outside of running the Urban Trail.

lets say you decided to do something other than teaching, what other career would you choose?

Librarian or book store owner! :)

i've seen you mention a few times that you quit using the birth control pill because you feel that it is unhealthy or dangerous. i myself am on the pill, and i'd actually never heard anything like that until you. i've tried to research it, but i can't really find a legit website with good info. could you maybe share some with me? or any place where i could find some good info on the matter? (sorry to be so lengthy!)

I don't think it's dangerous whatsoever. If I said anything like that, I only meant that I didn't want synthetic hormones dictating how my body worked. I don't take any medication- not even headache medicine, so it didn't make sense for me to be on pills like that. It's also important to note that I'm married, and my husband and I are ready to have children...so preventing pregnancy isn't important to us at this time.

Do your students ever comment on your clothing?

I'm a little unsure what this question means, but...yes? A lot of my girl students will tell me how much they love my outfits and it's really, really adorable when they come in wearing something and say "Mrs. Hampton- look! Don't you like this!?" Or, "Mrs. Hampton, my dress is just like the one you wore the other day!" It melts my heart!

I love your bangs and I have some myself. My only problem is that somedays my hair is not very manageable!!! How to you style your bangs so they always look perfect? Do you use any styling product? If so, which brands do you use? Thanks ;)

Okay so I wrap my hair in a towel for about 10 minutes after I shower and let it dry a bit, then I comb it all out, and tie all of my hair back minus my bangs. I don't put any product in them, and I just blowdry straight down, and side to side. After they're dry, then I do the rest of my hair. That's it! When I sleep I pin them to the side, and then use dry shampoo to freshen them up a bit.

I see that you have a lot of gorgeous tattoos :)!!! Do you have any aftercare tips?

All I do is sleep in it wrapped for the first night, then apply Aquaphor for the next few days.

How much do you shop?? I know that it is a silly question but my husband complains that I shop to much sometimes :) How much would you say you spent shopping every week and for how much money?

I don't really feel comfortable answering this question. Although I've answered questions about student loans and things of that nature, how much I spend shopping per week or whatever is too personal. Sorry! :)

What do you have against Angelina Jolie? :)

I think she's a homewrecking crazy person who is addicted to adopting and having children. When you have multiple nannies and help, enough is enough.

When you get a purse, how long to keep it? Do you wear it everyday for a few months, a year? Do you have a few purses that you switch according to your outfit of the day? I am trying to get better at purses!!! I tend to buy to many of poor quality and don't use them for more than a week or so :/ Please give me advices on how to buy leather handbags that are useful and of good quality!! What are your criterias on handbags?? Thanks ;)

I go through spurts. For instance, I've been carrying my tan MJ bag for awhile. I'm kind of lazy about switching them out, so I just have a bunch in their dustbags up on the top shelf of our closet. I definitely don't switch based on outfits- I prefer to buy bags that are more "everyday" bags. I think quality matters, so that's why I invest in nice quality purses and I suggest you doing the same! Buy one, nice quality bag you can't live without!

Are you thinking of buying a new MJ anytime soon? If you do, which one are you thinking of and what color would you be getting??? Xoxo

For spring, I'm thinking of getting either kelly green or red one! Very cute.

I really like how healthy you eat. Do you think that you could maybe blog more on dinners you cook, snacks you eat through the day etc... like how to you cook your tofu, which kind of beans do you get? I am new into this kind of food and I have no idea how to cook tofu for example, lol! Thanks ;)

I have been meaing to post that darn BBQ tofu recipe, but Hank has been working like a crazy person and we haven't had time to cook together this past week. I promise it is coming up soon. The tofu and sauce are in our fridge, just waiting to be eaten! :) Also keep an eye out for a post this week about an entire day of eating...I'm planning on photographing each thing that I consume, as odd as that sounds! Should be interesting for all of you lovely people who are curious about this topic.

I think that every girl gets breakout on their skin during certain period in a month right? I was wondering if you have any secret on how to get rid off them???? Do you have dry or oily skin? How do you manage it?

I definitely don't have perfect skin, but I've found that the less I do, the better. I used to be all about anti-acne creams, medications, etc. Now that I avoid anything harsh, I don't really break out! I don't have oily or dry skin, it's kind of just normal.

Do you have any recommendations for vegan cookbooks?

I really love the "How it All Vegan" series- click here to view them via Amazon.com!

Hello! What was the first song you and Hank danced to at your wedding?

We danced to "Love Me Tender" by Elvis Presley. :)

Hi! :) I was just wondering what your thoughts are on tanning (specifically, tanning beds). I notice you have pretty fair skin, just as I do. Do you burn in the sun? Have you ever done tanning salons? I'm curious to hear what you think of it all!

NO NO NO! Those are my feelings on tanning! YUCK! I don't even like to be in natural sunlight without tons of sunscreen. Unfortunately in high school and college I would join all of my girlfriends and tan tan tan via booths, but I haven't made that mistake since about 2003. I would never do it again, tattoos or not. I love having pale skin and dark hair, and it's also a great feeling to know I am doing everything possible to avoid skin cancer!

I think you talked about your skincare before, but I'm awed by your dewy skin. Do you use a highlighter or a balm to get that glow? Also do you use powder or cream blush?

Thank you! All I wear is foundation (Almay Truly Lasting Color in Buff) and MAC blush in "Springsheen." I love this blush, and I think its what gives me the glow and highlight on my cheeks!

What brand is your wallet? Is it a MJ as well? Would you ever do a blog post on what is inside your purse??

I have a few wallets I go between. My current one is MBMJ and red :). I will definitely do a "what's in my purse" post soon!

I know you said that you only eat meat if it's been grass fed and treated respectfully. Were is it that you find meat like that?

I don't know if I said I only eat meat that's treated respectfully...and if I did, I shouldn't have. No "meat" is respectfully treated, as it's killed. If I do eat meat, I eat grass-fed beef via our natural food store, and it's sad, but I just don't think about it. I was vegan for awhile, and Hank obviously doesn't eat meat...but I like it and do consume it from time to time.

When you first started teaching were you intimidated teaching kids close to your age? That would make me so nervous!

YES! See my post here about that topic.

I
have two dogs myself and I would love to know more about Madeline's routine. Like do you walk her everyday? Do you go to the dog park? What do you feed her? I hope that everybody knows that if corn is the first ingredient in dog food it is bad for them!!! Your dog is such a cutie by the way... Take care!

Madeline is the sweetest little baby in the whole world, and we definitely treat her like one. She loves to sleep, so she will usually sleep under the covers while Hank and I are getting ready for the day. And yes, she sleeps in the bed with us, snuggled right between us. Once she wakes up, Hank takes her out and plays with her in the yard for a little bit while I get her food ready. We leave her food out all day- she only eats when hungry so we don't even have to monitor it, which is nice. While we're not home, she gets full run of the house. It's insane, but she's never once chewed anything. I can leave her in a room full of shoes and handbags and she doesn't touch a thing. It's awesome. On work days, Hank usually comes home for lunch and hangs out, and then I get home around 3pm or so and take her on a walk, and hang out with her for the rest of the night. She's a pampered little pup. We don't do the dog park ever, but she goes to our Grandma's house once a week and plays with her dog, and will go to Phoenix with me and play with my parents' and sister's dog. I would say Madeline lives a happy life. :)

I have seen you with reading glasses before.... do you wear contacts everyday or do you wear glasses for watching tv, reading? Or are they just fake and just for fun??

I do have glasses I wear when I read, but I haven't worn them in long time. I need to get a new prescription. As far as the glasses I wear in photos, they're fake and for fun!

sunday

Hi Danielle! I love your blog, and all your fabulous pictures. Your family is so cute and perfect. When did you get Madeline? How old is she? Did you know right away that's what you wanted to name her? Will she stay that size (probably a dumb question; I don't know much about Boston Terriers)?Sorry to swamp you with all these questions :)

Hank and I got Madeline right after we got home from our honeymoon, in June of 2004. We got her from a woman just down the street from my parents' house. We saw her, and immediately fell in love! She is going to be 2 this April 15th. The story behind her name is kind of funny- we spent our honeymoon in French Polynesia, so a lot of the resort's guests spoke French. One afternoon Hank and I were swimming and we saw this little dark haired girl run part us screaming "BONJOOOOOOUUUURRR!" and she totally reminded us of the little girl Madeline from the children's book of the same name. It was adorable. When we adopted Madeline we decided to call her that, because she was a cute little spitfire of a thing too. :) And yes, she will always be this size- she was the runt of the litter and is still considered very tiny for a Boston. In my opinion they are the BEST breed and I recommend them to everyone.

Here's a photo of Madeline on her way home for the first time- RIGHT after we picked her up. LOOK HOW SMALL SHE IS!! I die every time I see this photo.

If you could impart one piece of wisdom or advice to every person on this planet, what would it be?

BE POSITIVE! It's a choice. Choose to be positive and you will see how much it impacts your life.

Who are the "heroes" in your life?

My Mom and Dad. Hands down. They're both "survivors" and incredibly loving and amazing. They gave my sister and I the most amazing childhood, and I hope I will be even half the parents they are. I love them.

mom and dad

Hey there Danielle. I understand you were in a sorority in college. There's a Pi Beta Phi at my school as well. What were some of the best parts of being in a sorority? What motivated you to rush one? Did you ever have problems with the "sorority girl" attitudes I've heard rumors about, or are they just that?

You can read a post about that by clicking here. :D

Hi there, Danielle.
I was reading through your entry about your depression issues. I was just wondering if you ever suffered from self-infliction, suicide, or anything like that. I understand that this is a really personal question, and it's fine if you don't want to open up that can of worms. (Sorry if this made you uncomfortable!)

Fortunately no, I've never hurt myself or even contemplated suicide. I've been at low points, but never that bad (thankfully).

Is there a post dedicated to your "Hank" tattoo?

No, but here's a photo-

and mine...

So I've kind of thought of teaching as something to do but I was no good in high school I had a very hard time with my grades so how can I be a teacher if I couldn't hardly get through school without having to do everything in my power to catch up with homework. I have a love for photography though its kind of a family thing, so I'm thinking about somehow majoring in photography, I guess that didn't turn out into a question. Any advice?

Your performance in high school has nothing to do with your performance as a teacher. I was quite the "social" person in HS and grades were not my focus. And now, I love teaching and I'm quite successful. Just go for it! And you could be a photography teacher- awesome.

So if you teach high school english, what does your little sister teach? and how old are you both, my sister and I are 7 years apart and I feel that we should be closer.

She teaches 6th grade Science.

Kind of random: You mentioned once before that you love mac & cheese. Do you have a good recipe for BAKED mac & cheese? For the life of me I can't find one that works for me. Thanks, I absolutely love your blog!

I don't, but my friend Robyn does! Click here to visit her blog and ask her. She's come over and cooked for Hank and me before and it was DELISH.

How old were you when you graduated high school? (if you started teaching at 22?)

17.

What would you say is the thing that you cannot resist at? It could include food (donuts, ice cream, chocolate, fries....), shoes, purses, clothes and many more...?? =)

Great question! I have a couple of very strange answers for you. Number one, I love love love this burrito place in Mesa, where I grew up. I absolutely cannot resist a Filiberto's burrito no matter how hard I try. My sister and I don't go very often, but if it's brought up I have to! Best burrito ever. Number two, I really cannot resist pie. If there is a homebaked pie, I usually need to have a slice. And I consider myself a very great pie-maker...so I can be in trouble around the holidays! ;) So those are my two food must-haves. YUM!

late dinner

Nanny's famous apple pie

Would you ever write your own book?

Yes, I hope to.

Awesome blog!! a couple of questions. What made you get so many tattoos?Does the school mind? Do your students read your blog?? Ps i Love your style!!

What "made" me get so many tattoos is my love for tattoos! I plan on getting a lot more. The school doesn't mind. As far as students reading my blog, maybe! But I hope not. ;) And thank you for the compliment.

Hiya! I love your outfit posts now, great great! You have me shopping online and ebaying a whole lot more. Anyhoo, what I wanted to ask, was how do you wash your clothes and what detergent do you use? Do you handwash, dry clean, machine wash, and which ones goes for where. I am now starting to invest in more expensive high end clothes, and want to ensure there preservation. Thanks!

I dry clean all of my "nice" clothing. As I am getting older I buy a lot more quality pieces, so I have been hand washing and dry cleaning more and more.

Did it hurt to get your ribs tattooed?

UM YES! Horribly. But the outcome is worth it.

What would you say are the material things you could not live without? Can you give us a top 5? =)

Hmm...

1) my laptop (I love the internet too much to ever live without it!)
2) books/my Kindle
3) dresses
4) my cameras
5) my wedding ring because it makes me happy

where did u get that marc jacob dress with the apple heart print?

Neiman Marcus

Hi Danielle :) I wanted to know, when you got your tattoos, did you get all of them in a few months going like every other weeks or did you get them in a few years? I just got into tattoos and in the past 2 months I have been going very often, I wonder if it is normal or if I am crazy!!!

I get one or two a year, but in the beginning I got them more frequently. It's new and exciting! Just be sure you're thinking things through- I'm sure you are. :)

You said that you are going to do more soon but you don't want to say what it is going to be (I respect that) but could you tell us where you are going to do it? Xoxo

My other arm! :)

How do you and Hank keep the "fire" in your marriage?

I know this might be an annoying answer, but our marriage doesn't really take a lot of work. I know many people say that marriage does in fact take work, but for us, it's not very hard at all. We spend tons of time together and both of us consistently do little things to make the other's day better. I feel lucky that my husband is a man who is very open and emotional, and shares what he is thinking and feeling all of the time. As far as "fire," it's always there. I do feel that our multiple date nights every week help a lot. Both
of our willingness to give our time to the other is important too.

love my darling- he leaves for tour in the morning :(

Do your dresses and cardigans usually cover all of your tattoos? or are there bits and pieces showing from time to time at work?

Usually. Sometimes different pieces will stick out, like the bottom of my sleeve or top of my chest...but it's not a big deal. I've also worn short sleeves a couple of times and it wasn't an issue.

Hey Danielle... I was just curious as to how tall you are and what size pants you wear? You look so tiny in your pics, but it is really hard to tell.

I am 5'4" (although people tell me 5'3"! I stick to 5'4"!) and if I MUST wear jeans I wear a 28. I wouldn't say I'm tiny, I feel like I'm pretty normal sized. :)

How long do you keep your clothes and shoes? One season or a year or two? Do you get tired to wear them very fast or you are more the kind of girl that keeps her stuff for a long time? Just curious ;)

I keep everything forever, until it wears out or until I don't like it anymore. I don't pay any attention to seasons or what's "in." I just wear what appeals to me, and if I love it, I will wear it every "season" for the rest of my life!

What sorority were you in during college?

Pi Beta Phi

How does your nightstand looks like? I know that it is a weird question but I am always curious about it :) Do you have books, hand lotion on it?

lamp, books, and hand lotion! You were almost 100% right! :)

Hi! Super blog Danielle! I noticed in the pictures from the baby shower you attended you wore a watch. Never saw that on you before, what kind is it? I love watches!

Here's a closer photo of it :)

my favorite watch

Will you do a little post about your sleeve? Thanks :). Love your blog!

Yes, I will this week! I meant to last week but whenever I remembered to, Hank wasn't home to take the photos. :)

What type of a mother do you think you will be? Do you want to do a lot of crafts?

I hope I am just like my mom! Tons of crafts, adventures, love, songs, and fun. She was amazing. I'll be leaving work once we have kiddos so I'm looking forward to being very present, and having lots of time for lots of fun and learning. Even when they're in school we plan on me being home so I can always be there for them and our family. Great question :).

Formspring Sunday V.4

Hi again, here's my fourth edition of formspring questions and answers. You can view the earlier posts by clicking here, here, and here. If you don't see your question, I've probably already answered it, so visit those posts or utilize the search feature. I also wanted to mention that I got quite a few questions on our house and the tattoo on my arm, so I'll be making separate posts on those things in the near future. Check back in the next few weeks. :)

Here we go...

Formspring Sunday

What kind of day planner do you use? What kinds of things do you write in it?

I don't use anything fancy, just the type you can buy at Target. A lot of my friends use their blackberries or iphones to schedule things but I really need a tangible little book I can write in. I write everything in it- daily appointments, gym schedules (I plan my workouts before I do them), to-do lists, etc.

OMG i just found your blog through another one here in Australia. I am addicted!! i love your style and tattoos. But i digress...Im wondering how you stay motivated to eat the yummy foods you eat and do you ever eat not so healthy foods? ie Hot chips (fries) i think you call it. Ps, you have TOTALLY motivated me to want to eat nicer healthier foods. So thanks :D

YES! I totally indulge sometimes. But, I'm naturally not into fried foods or lots of sugar, so when I do indulge it's not really in horribly terrible food. I kind of eat whatever I want, I don't diet. But the reason this works for me is because I don't crave unhealthy foods. I stay motivated to eat this way because I think healthy food is yummier, more filling, and it makes me happy to treat my body with respect.

Hey There! I love your blog and noticed you mentioned you livejournaled for many years before you started this blog. Could you post a link to your LJ? I would love to see it!

Most of it is private, but one day if I make it public I will send a link.

Hey Danielle! I don't know if this is too personal of a question but I noticed you posted some photos that says "it's been 2 years now" and I believe it's your brother. I'm really sorry to hear that. I was just wondering if you would be willing to share what happened?

Kendall wasn't my blood brother, but a little brother to Hank and myself- one of our best friends and truly our family. It was horrible what happened, and without getting into detail, I will say that it was drug-related. The entire situation is still, to this day, very unclear and his mom believes their was foul play involved but no one will ever really know. I feel lucky that I got to spend time with him the day before it happened, give him a hug, and we got to say I love you to one another. I still get upset when I listen to his band, or see old photos of us, because I feel anger in regards to the situation and people who were involved. It's the worst feeling to just have such a big part of your life gone- especially when its someone who was truly the sunshine throughout so much of it.

Your blog is so inspirational to me. I can't wait to see what else you write everytime I read it! I'm getting married this year and am not religious either. I was wondering what way you went about getting married since you aren't religious? We were considering just having a justice of the peace outdoors. Thoughts or advice?

Even though we're not religious, I still wanted to do a traditional type of ceremony. We used an ordained minister that our venue recommended, and when we met with him we told him we wanted no mention of "god" or anything like that. We just wanted him to focus on the joining together or two people. There was one part that we included where he asked our guests to take a moment and send positive energies, prayers, whatever they wanted to us. I thought that was neat because it encompassed positive thinking and not just religion.

Do you keep a personal journal, or does your blog knd of take it's place?

I keep a personal, written journal that I write in a few times a week!

I noticed that you do your nails on Sundays. Do you find they chip mid week? Do you need to do touch ups throughout the week?

I usually repaint my nails on Wednesday or Thursday. I hate the look of any chips so by painting 2x a week I can avoid that.

Is it hard to find dresses/skirts that aren't too short for work? What are your rules for what is appropriate work wear?

It's not too hard because I'm pretty short. As far as rules for what is appropriate, I just go by the school dress code.

When will the next hour of the wolf show be in Prescott!?

I have no idea- Lance (the singer) is currently in Wyoming working. You can always stay up to date via their Myspace or Facebook page.

I'm so sorry if this is an odd question, but what sort of deodorant/antiperspirant do you use? I've recently decided to try to switch to an aluminum free type, but I'm not sure I enjoy the brands I've found so far.

I've gone back and forth with using natural deodorants/natural deodorant crystals and I have to be honest- I've NEVER found a good one. Working around people all day, gym visits...all of these make a good deodorant pretty necessary. I know that the aluminum isn't good for me, but for now, I use Secret. If you have any other suggestions let me know!

If you have a stomach ache at home and you man is there, what do you do so you can "go" to the bathroom without feeling embarrassed? I HATE it when this happens and we have a one bedroom apartment, so I'm sure you can hear everything.

Oh my. This is an invasive question, and I'm sure Amber will bbm me and say "um you get some weird questions" yet again. haha. But I'm happy to answer...why not?! I've come this far in being open. My husband and I are very open and very close BUT bathroom going-ons is one area that I don't care to share with him. I have some friends that actually have done the deed in front of their hubbies, while the hubs was shaving or whatever. EEK! More power to them, but that's not for me. I just close the door and don't really think that much about it, but if we have people over I would probably run the water or something. I don't really know if I'm answering your question but I just do what I have to do, I don't think too much about it.

Are you on good reads? If so, do you add people like me that you don't personally know?

I am not on good reads, but if I was I would add you. :)

Danielle, I was wondering when the next giveaway is, if there is one.

A few of my blog friends are having some right now, so probably once those are over and then I'll have one! I already have my little gift all ready to go, so stay tuned!

Just a quick question- where did you get those delightful black and white shoes from saturdays post? They're exactly the shoes I've been searching for since Autumn!
Love reading your blog, Aoife

I feel like tap dancing.

I got those shoes from Nordstrom- click here for the link!

Hi Danielle. You have no idea how much I adore your blog, but when I found out your favorite author/poet of all time was Sylvia Plath, I just had to know...why? I have loved her since I read Ariel in the seventh grade.

I love her for many, many reasons. When I first discovered her in junior high I would read her poetry every single night before I went to bed- I felt that she had such an insane way of describing the ordinary. I fell in love with her writing. Something about it just speaks to me, and I feel she was a true genius.

Hope you are enjoying the day off like I am! Reason number 89 why teaching is wonderful. :) Quick question- how did you make your blog button? Thanks...off to get another tattoo tomorrow, yeah!

I made my blog button by following a tutorial. I don't remember which one I used, but if you search via google you can find a million. Click here to visit one I just found.

Have you ever tried Hot Yoga? I just started doing it recently and fell in love with it. It seems like something you would enjoy!

YES! I love hot yoga, and yoga in general. I practice yoga about 2 times per week at home, but lately I've been thinking about joining our local yoga studio.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to you?

I can't really think of one, which is strange. If I do, I will be sure to post it next time.

What are the top three things on your "bucket list"?

I don't keep a bucket list, but here are a few things I'd love to do before I die!

visit Egypt
African safari
visit Japan

What would you say is your best feature?

Hmmm...this is hard. I like my face in general (that sounds weird), would that be considered a feature? I get lots of compliments on my eyes, so I suppose I would say eyes if I had to narrow it down.

What is the most exciting place you have ever been and why?

I would say Moorea on our honeymoon. It's a small island next to Tahiti, all the way down in French Polynesia. It was an amazing experience. From our glass-bottom hut to jungle safari, to exotic fish and coral reefs, it was so exciting and a great time. One day soon I'll do a little post on it.

When do you think you will be getting your next tattoo? Any ideas of what you want?

Pretty soon, and yes...but it's a secret until I get it. ;)

Hey there, Danielle. In previous posts you mentioned you did dance and gymnastics. What kind of dance did you do? Do you continue anything like that today?

I did all kinds of dance. I started with ballet with I was 3 (!!) and then got into tap, jazz, and hip hop as well. I LOVE LOVE LOVE to dance and I do so whenever I can! I don't take classes or anything like that, but I dance around my house everyday. My friend and I were considering taking an adult tap class, so maybe and hopefully that happens!

hello there:) i just wanted to know how u got your blog out there. im really interested in making one and wondered how you get people to go and read it. thanks cutie!

I didn't do anything actually, I just started writing and then people started reading! :)

I love your style, hair and makeup!! You are a big inspiration to me now... I have a question. Do you wear lipstick? If so, what is the brand and color please... What blush do you use now and foundation?

Thank you so very much! I'm not a big makeup person at all and I never wear lipstick. All I ever wear on my lips is Burt's Bees Pomegranate chapstick! As far as foundation, I wear Almay's Truly Lasting Color in "Buff," and my current blush is MAC's "Springsheen." I have considered wearing red lipstick, and next time I am in Phoenix I may stop by MAC and see if I want to delve into lipstick territory! If I find one I love, I'll be sure to post it. :)

I see you like alot of crafting blogs! Do you do any type of craft? :)

I really love to read blogs of crafty ladies but surprisingly I'm not into crafting myself. I scrapbook from time to time, and I have a sewing machine I've used sporadically but overall crafting doesn't really do it for me. I think when we buy a house I could see myself getting into re-upholstery and re-doing furniture though! You never know.

I love your tattoos!! One question. What font did you use for your wrist word tattoo? Thanks :)

It's not a font- my tattoo artist at the time just drew it up. Unfortunately he doesn't tattoo anymore, but when he did, script was one of his specialties.

Where do you get all your ideas for healthy meals, snacks, breakfast etc? Also, how to you know when to add seeds or wheat germ, pollen and many more? Do you search online, do you have any book references?

I get most of my ideas from my Mom, actually. She is an insanely healthy person and eater and always has been. She comes up with the neatest recipes of things she just throws together, and also has a lot of knowledge regarding supplements, vitamins, and natural remedies. I go home to visit a lot, and every Sunday it's tradition to go shopping together. We always stop at Sprouts and I always seem to come home with new ideas! As far as books, I would recommend the "The Eat Clean Diet," by Tosca Reno (click on title/authore to view it on amazon.com) for people looking to learn more about how I eat most of the time. It's not a "diet," but more of a lifestyle in terms of eating good for you whole foods and focusing on nutrition. That book will also give you a lot of info on healthy supplements and additions to food! Happy reading!

just curious, because i'm in the market for a new phone. i LOVE apple, and i've read that you and hank do as well... but you own a blackberry. do you prefer that, or would you want an iphone?

I really can't get behind touch screen phones- they totally annoy me! Plus, most of my bffs have blackberry messenger and I'd be so sad to lose that awesome mode of communication.

Would you ever consider posting a workout playlist? I'd be interested in what type of music keeps you motivated at the gym. Thanks!

Yes! I will do that this week. Thanks for the great idea. :)

this may be a bit personal but did you have to take out student loans for college? If so, did you go through your bank? Are you finding them hard to pay off?

I took out some student loans, and I also had grants. I went through the federal government by filling out a FAFSA, which I recommend. That's how I got many grants that helped me through school. I don't find them hard to pay off at all because my interest rate is really low and my monthly payments are low as well. Because I paid for my own undergrad and grad school, my starting amount to pay back was a lot but luckily the amount is steadily declining!

You've talked about your workout wear, but what about shoes? I've always heard that the shoes you wear when working out are important. What are your favorites?

I just wear New Balance running shoes, nothing special. NB and Sacouny are my favorite workout shoe brands.

Hi! your outfit from 1.16.10 is adorable! I really love the long sleeves and the shoes. Where did you get them? I love your style, you should let us know where you found them when you post pictures! :)

The dress is from Forever 21, and I posted about the shoes above. If you click on the photo you're interested in, I usually give details via Flickr. I will be sure to include them in the blog though from now on. Thanks! :)

Hi Danielle! I know you get a lot of questions/comments on your tattoos; they are beautiful pieces of art. Are you worried about what pregnancy might do to them? (Sorry, that's kind of a funny question.)

People ask me this all the time, and to be honest- no, I don't worry about it at all! :) I take good care of myself, and I know I will do my best to get back into pre-pregnancy shape. If any of them change, then so be it. It's my body, and as long as I am treating it right and working hard, I feel like it's important to accept it no matter what. Hank doesn't care of my rib panel gypsy lady suddenly looks weird- and he's the only person I care about impressing.

Did you and Hank get your "matching" tattoos at the same time?

I actually got my little one first, when we got engaged, as a surprise for him. His was a surprise for me on our wedding.

Hey there, Danielle! Let me just start off by saying how adorable you are, and how much I love your blog. You are so beautiful with how honest and open you are; you share every piece of your world with us. I know that you struggled with "body issues". Did you ever suffer from any depression or anything like that during that time?

Yes. Up until this past year I'd struggled with depression here and there. You can read more about that by clicking here. After you read it, let me know if you have any more questions. :)

You come off as such a strong, confident women. You are absolutely beautiful, but I know you sometimes have to deal with "being different". I live in Prescott also, and the older folk are fairly conservative. How do you stay so confident and true to yourself when you are surrounded by adversity;when you could be considered the "black sheep". (I apologize if that doesn't make sense; it's a little wordy.)

It's a pretty simple answer- I just don't care what those people think. I used to for sure, and I would feel weird when Hank and I would go out to, let's say dinner- I'd be wearing a strapless dress or something and I'd get so many dirty looks. As I've gotten older though, I feel BAD for those people. There's nothing I pity more than someone who feels they need to judge others and put others down...it's a sad existence. I like being different and at this point in my life I just feel like our time on this earth is WAY too short to care what anyone thinks.

Do you and your husband share the same views about religion? Do you personally think it's important to hold the same beliefs regarding religion in a marriage?? (I ask because my boyfriend and I do not share the same religiousbeliefs and I often wonder if situations like that have worked out for others....) Thanks :)

We have similar views, but he is a total atheist- he really believes that there is nothing out there, and he feels very, very strongly about this. I, on the other hand, just don't know what's out there, so I choose not to label myself as anything. I can't speak for every marriage and how it would work to have two opposing viewpoints, but I know for me (and Hank) it wouldn't work because a) I would refuse to go to church and b), I would never make it a priority. Now, a LOT of my closest friends are religious and I respect that...but I still find organized religion to be really weird and not for me, ever. I can't even imagine being with someone who put those things as a priority since I definitely don't. But again, if you do, awesome! Go you. ;)

Hi Danielle, I just want you to know that your blog is absolutely great!! It seems you're such a sweet person !! As we can see, you love tattoos, but what about piercing ? Have you been pierced ?? Thx for the answer and sorry if my english is a bit "messy", I'm just a little frenchie girl ^^ Xoxo

I had piercings when I was younger- a couple nose piercings, lip, ears gauged to 00, belly button...but I took those all out when I was about 21 or 22 and I don't think I will ever have a piercing again- I'm just not into them. If anything, I may re-stretch my ears but I'm still unsure.

Have you and Hank ever been in a fight?

Of course! I can't imagine being in a relationship where you didn't argue and get upset. We definitely fight fair though, and work through issues we have really quickly. These days we don't really "fight" anymore, we more so just discuss. Back in the day though, I had quite a little temper on me. As I've gotten older I really don't get mad that often which is an improvement.

In the future, when you are pregnant with your first wee one, will you blog throughout the experience? I hope so! :)

YES! Absolutely.

I see you always eating "berries", i have heard & read they great anti-oxidants, have you noticed this ie. has your skin improved? I really admire your healthy eating habits...x

My skin is so sensitive that my food choices really do affect it. When I eat a lot of whole foods- berries included, my skin looks its best.

what kinds of things do you do for hank while he is on tour? how do you like to welcome him back home when he gets back?

We stay in really great touch via our blackberry messengers. He usually calls me every night if he can, but a lot of the time we have a time difference and it doesn't work out. He makes an effort to either leave me a voicemail or email for when I wake up, and constantly sends me postcards. When he's been out of the country though, all bets are off. I welcome him back by having the house perfectly clean and some fresh baked sweet treats in the dessert tray (he has a big sweet tooth!)

How many bands is your husband in?

He is in a few: he plays guitar in Hour of the Wolf, bass in a band called Hot Skin, and he also is working on his own stuff. It's kind of in the vein of ISIS. He also recently recorded some songs in CA with some dudes from other bands as a side project from their respective bands (As I Lay Dying, Casey Jones, HOTW).

Do you have any tips for meeting friends?

I've had the same friends forever, so I'm never really looking to make new ones when I'm out and about, although I welcome it if it happens. I would say though just to be yourself and be friendly! :)

Hello! I have a question...what do you dp to cheer yourself up if you're feeling down? Especially if you're alone - maybe Hank's on tour and no ones around - what little pick me ups do you have? I always like to paint my nails a "happy" color!

I have a bunch of things I like to do when I feel down! Number one- workout! It's my fool-proof happy plan. I also enjoy reading, watching a silly reality show on television, or doing something nice for someone else.

Do you accept blog friends via Facebook, or is it just for real friends? xxx

As long as you leave a note that you're a blog follower (in the request form), I have no problem adding blog friends! :)

I watched the video you made of friends driving and playing wii etc and was wondering what song is playing at the end of the video. I can't for the life of me remember what song that is!

12/30/09 from Danielle Hampton on Vimeo.

The song is called "Us" by Regina Spektor.

I love reading your blog. I think you're really inspirational and such a roll model. First, I was wondering how you keep such a positive attitude about things? My second question is sort of random but what are your favorite Target and Trader Joe's buys? I notice that you shop there pretty often.

I keep a positive attitude by telling myself to do so! It's really a choice, every single day. Seriously, try it! Wake up tomorrow and say "Go away negativity, you will have NO part in my day today!" If you keep forcing a PMA, it will eventually become a part of you. :)

I was just wondering, is the house you are currently in the one you are going to buy, or are you just renting and on the look-out for another?

Definitely not this place! Whenever that time comes we will shop around for our perfect place.

I absolutely adore your style. You always look so fresh and trendy. Do you always choose to wear skirts and dresses? Do you ever wear shorts and jeans?

I love love love dresses and have a pretty substantial collection, and I try to add to it whenever I can. I just think they look so cute and feminine. I'm not a jeans girls at all, and although I own a few pairs I avoid wearing them if possible. In the summer I do wear shorts sometimes, although I do feel that dresses are the most comfortable.

You seem like such a lady, and girly-girl. Do you like doing outdoorsy things like camping, hiking, etc.? Or more for the mall? Where are you favorite places to hang out?

I am NOT outdoorsy at all. I enjoy spending time outside, but just at places like parks, the beach, on long walks, etc. I don't enjoy camping at all. I don't "hang out" anywhere besides my or my parents'/sisters'/close friends' houses really. I do love going to the movie though if you consider that a hangout!

You have such beautiful skin! Do you ever have breakouts, or did you when you were younger?

I still do have occasional breakouts! I did when I was younger- typical teenage stuff. Now my skin is pretty much clear but on occasion I will get a blemish...which is so very annoying! Oh, and thank you for the compliment. :)

Hi Danielle! I've noticed that you always are dressed so nicely with a dress and makeup on! How do you do this on weekends or days you don't have to leave the house? I admire you for that!

I usually always leave the house to either go to work or run an errand, so I always get dressed. I don't really wear that much makeup though, so it's not a big deal to throw some foundation and mascara on, but I usually try and make an effort when I go out. I'm not one to wear sweats in public, ever. At the most, I may run an errand after the gym but then it's usually just yoga pants which aren't horrible in my opinion. When it's going to be a home day, like today, I always wake up and brush my teeth, wash my face, and put on some minimal makeup. That way I feel my best, even if I'm just lounging around.

What is your daily make-up Routine?

VERY simple. Almay foundation and under eye concealer, MAC blush, mascara, and chapstick. Done in 10 min.

Hey there, Danielle. You are so adorable! These questions are kind of stupid (and immature) but what are some of your "favorites" (color, movie, book, food, etc.)? Haha, I just like to know the basics :)

Not stupid at all! :) My favorite colors are yellow, light gray, peach, and mint green. My fave movies are (this is just off the top of my head) Amelie, American History X, The Little Mermaid, Troop Beverly Hills, Welcome to the Dollhouse, Death Becomes Her, Goodfellas, The Last Unicorn, Little Monsters, You've Got Mail, A League of Their Own, The Shining, My Girl, The Wrestler...I could go on but I should probably stop! hah. My favorite book is The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath. And my favorite foods are: any kind of berry, brussel sprouts, sushi, and pie! :)

Danielle, you have such a beautiful smile! Did you ever have braces? And how do you keep your teeth so white?

Yes, I had braces for about two years in junior high. I've used all sorts of whitening treatments (it helps to have your best friend's hubby be a dentist!) but good old Crest White Strips are an easy way to do it. I have trays and in the past the Opalesence whitening system has been the best, but it's very pricey so if you don't have a dentist in the fam just stick to white strips!

What kind of mascara do you use? Your eyelashes always look perfect, never clumpy.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Covergirl's Lashblast.

What would you do if you won the lottery?

I would travel around the world with Hank! Literally the entire world.

You always look beautiful. What are some of your favorite brands you like to wear?

Aww, thank you, anonymous person! As far as brands- all sorts- anywhere you can think of, I bet I can find something wearable!

Dear Danielle,
I really love the fact that you are so family-oriented. Are you as close to Hank's family as you are to your own?

Yes, I spend a lot of time with them which is really nice. :)

Does your husband blog?

Sometimes! You can visit his posterous page by clicking here.

Thanks for all the fun questions everyone! I hope you enjoyed reading them. As always, you can ask me/tell me anything via the form up there to the left.

Have a great night! :)

Formspring Sunday V.3

Time for my weekly Formspring questions and answers, volume three! If you'd like to read the other posts you can do so here and here. And as always, feel free to ask or tell me anything in that little box up there to the left.

I also wanted to add that I skipped about 10 of the questions that I've already answered, so be sure to check the above links or my search feature up there on the right if you don't see you question!

Also- I wish there was a way to make a sort of livejournal cut type of thing so this didn't take up so much space. Does anyone know how to do anything like that?

Formspring V.3

I read in your blog that you use dry shampoo and I LOVED the idea that I wouldn't have to wash my hair everyday! I was wondering what kind of dry shampoo do you use and where do you buy it? Thanks so much! I really love reading your blog!

I wrote a post about my favorite dry shampoo here, and it still is my favorite brand! Some people complain that the product amount isn't worth the price, but I actually have found it to last quite awhile because I only use it in my bangs.

What is your routine at the gym? I am trying to get back into it and need some inspiration. Thanks :-)

I try to workout about 6 days a week. I typically will do 45-60 minutes of cardio (mix up the machines or run outside) and then lift alternating body parts. For instance tonight is legs, tomorrow is back and chest, and Sunday is bi/tri and shoulders. I also alternate abs every few days. I get bored of the gym though, so I like to use classes and videos to mix it up. I love spin class, and some of my favorite videos are Jillian Michaels' 30-day Shred and P90X videos. I also enjoy both running and "speed-walking" outdoors. When it gets nicer out, I absolutely love riding my bike (a beach cruiser) A LOT too!

Who made your blog layout? It's super cute!

I made the original header and the lovely Lindsay at Her Sunday Dress added to it, and also did the cute overall layout. She's a talented lady and if you're in the mood for a new look, don't hesitate to contact her- she's the sweetest!

What are your religious beliefs?

I don't have any! I don't follow any religion, I don't believe in god. I believe in love, and I believe in being a good person and doing the right thing, and these things have brought me all the happiness in the world. Although I feel strongly that religion is absolutely not for me or my family, I am open to anything, so if someday I had an experience where I said, "yes, yes there is a god," then I would believe in god. I also don't feel that there is just nothing- I do think there is some sort of energy in this world, turning the universe. There are too many amazing coincidences and miracles to just say there is absolutely nothing.

Do you think you'll ever go back to working once you've had kids?

I don't think I'd ever go back to a job outside of the home, but I would definitely love to write children's book and possibly novels. At the same time though, I never like to say never...so I guess I should say that I am unsure at this point. :)

What time do you go to bed? You always seem so energetic and seem to get so much done in your days? How do you accomplish it all in a day? Do you require a certain amount of sleep? Also, you mentioned your skin routine...do you always recommend a moisturizer even if somebody has horrible skin (like me)? I'm always afraid that the moisturizer will make me break out more. But then my face seems dry in areas too. (that may be an odd question, lol)

I go to bed anywhere between 10pm and midnight and wake up between 6am and 7am, depending on if I have to shower. If I workout in the morning I get up at 4:45am and go to bed around 9:30am. I am typically very energetic, where I get a lot of sleep or a little bit of sleep. I function best on 8 hours of sleep- my skin looks its best and I feel really happy and healthy. Normally I do get 8 hours, but sometimes 7. Last school year I got into a bad habit of getting just 4-5 hours of sleep and I hated it. The question of "how do I get so much accomplished" comes up a lot, and honestly I don't feel like I do that much but thinking about it, I guess I really do. You have to think about the fact that my work day is over at 3pm. I have the entire evening to do as I please, with my only responsibilities being to hang out with my husband and pup, workout, cook dinner, and I also love to fit in blogging. I still manage to have enough time to be lazy for awhile too. I think its my great teacher schedule! :)

As far as skin...moisturizer is KEY! If you don't moisturize, your skin will get dry, causing it to produce more oil, which in turn clogs your pores and will make you break out! I recommend any lotion that is oil-free and won't clog your pores! I love Purpose's face lotion with SPF 15.

What are your top 5 favorite songs right now?

Songs are hard for me but here are my most favorite songs that have been on repeat a lot this week!

Frank Turner, To Take You Home
Jay-Z, Young Forever
Stay Gold, TGIF
Count Me Out, My Regret
Dolly Parton, 9 to 5

I listen to a really strange mix of music, I know. My tastes are allll over the place.

Is Hank a romantic guy? Like does he bring home flowers and gifts just because?

He is super romantic in our own little way. Here's a little example-

Surprise!

Last time he was on tour, he hid little notes saying "I love you" and other cute stuff all over the place. Even under the last slice of bread I often eat for breakfast! Silly and so adorable. He finds really sweet ways to always let me know he's thinking of me and I love that about him.

where did you go to high school? do you think hank and you would have dated in high school?

I went to high school at Red Mountain High in Mesa, AZ. I definitely think we would have dated. Most of the guys I hung out with and dated were skateboarders and into music, and he was into the same stuff. I should get a photo of him from high school and post it. SO CUTE.

What kind of camera do you use?

I use two different little digitals for quick things- a Nikon and a Canon. But for most of my photos I'll use our D-SLR- Nikon D60. :)

Was Hank the first person you fell in love with?

Before Hank, I thought I was in love twice. But after meeting Hank, those relationships couldn't hold a candle even to the first week of Hank and me. Nothing compares, and I don't consider anything before Hank "love."

What attire do you normally wear to the gym? I want to start going but I feel so self conscious in that gym wear!

I wear the same thing all the time: black yoga capri pants (click here for my favorite one from Victoria's Secret- I have a million pairs of the black on black) and a hoodie with a tee shirt under it or just a long sleeved tee. I usually like to sweat a lot when I go so I prefer to wear the sweatshirt the entire time, but I have the tee on in case I get hot, or if I need to remove it when I left. If I wasn't tattooed I would probably wear little tank tops rather than tees but it's the most annoying thing in the world to go to one of the only gyms in town as a high school teacher. I probably see 20 students there every time I go, and it's just easier not to be "out and proud." haha. I'm looking forward to when I don't have to deal with that anymore. But as far as being self-conscious, don't be! Everyone is there for the same reason you are. Wear what is comfortable, and anyone who tries to make you feel any less than comfortable is just ridiculous!

to teach English, did you have to major in Education and English or just English? Thanks for your time!!!

My BA was in English Literature, and my M.Ed. was in Secondary English Education. You'd have to check with your state for the standard, but these days you have to be "highly qualified" in your area to teach it, so getting a major in English and in Education would be the best route.

Do you find that since you have been a teacher (especially for English!) that you read less for your own pleasure? When you do find time to do so, do you have any go to authors or books?

I actually read a lot more! Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday my students and I read for ten minutes at the start of class. They can choose to read whatever they'd like. So for me, that adds up to about an hour a day! Plus, I make time to read for about an hour every night. Besides working out, reading is my number one hobby so I don't think I will ever read less if I can help it. As far as go to authors, I have the widest ranges of reading interests. Stay tuned for a book recommendation post soon! :)

Hey there, Danielle. I have been following your blog for a while and I love how positive and optimistic you are; it's an admirable quality that I'm sure inspires many people to follow suite. What people, or things, inspire you the most?

I am inspired by so much. Number one would be my little town. It's hard to describe but living here makes me want to just stay inside and bake and cook and keep our cute little house in perfect domestic bliss. I know that sounds weird but I feel like Prescott is a dream place for me- it's the kind of town I would imagine when I was younger, and I now I live here. I love walking around downtown and spending time on the square, it makes me so happy. I am also constantly inspired by blogs. I could spend hours on the computer just browsing all of the amazing images that exist. I recently was asked by my friend Tyler to name 10 specific things that inspire me for an issue of his zine, and here is my list- (you can click here to see this list with photos too!)

1) my husband Hank - his love and all around amazing-ness inspires me everyday.
2) books. And I mean books in general. The way they look, smell, everything. I like to always be surrounded by them.
3) Sylvia Plath. She is my all-time favorite writer- I can literally get lost for hours in her poetry. I also love her unabridged journals. Check 'em out.
4) tattooed ladies of the early 1900s. We have a wall in our home dedicated to photos of them.
5) Angelique Houtkamp, artist/tattooer. I love everything she creates.
6) the television show "My So-Called Life," circa 1994/95. Angela Chase is one of the coolest ladies to ever grace my television screen.
7) style blogs and style sites (like lookbook.nu, facehunter, etc)
8) our pup Madeline...she's so cute you can't help but be inspired by her.
9) old children's books from the 1930s and 40s, like "Caps for Sale" and "The Little House."
10) the adorable French film, "Amelie."

I know that Hank is tattooed but did his parents ever give you a hard time because you are tattooed?

Not at all, which is awesome. His parents probably give him and his sister a harder time than me. ;)

Can you post some pictures and a little tutorial of how you do your manicure? I love doing mine on a Sunday, but not always does my nailpolishcome out the best. Yours however, ALWAYS looks fab!

I got 4 or 5 of these comments about my nails so I will definitely post something when I repaint them! And thank you for the compliment, I definitely don't think I do anything special but I'll post a video anyway!

Sorry if you've gotten this question already, when did you get your first visible tattoo? Had you already decided you wanted to be a teacher? I am an aspiring high school History teacher and I already have a tattoo on my wrist. I had not decided that was what I wanted to do until after my tattoo. I'm hoping it won't be a problem! Thanks :]

It's totally okay! :) I posted this question because I got quite a few tattoo questions this time around. You can always check out this post here! I think I am going to make a little box for my sidebar that includes some of these frequently requested posts.

Hi Danielle! I never knew you had a VW. What kind was it? The bug? Do you have any pictures of it? It is my favourite car in the world actually!

Before this past year, I was always a VW girl! I miss them a lot actually. My very first car was a 1998 VW Passat, it was Sky Blue. I got it when I was 16 (in 1998) and I loved it so, so much. It was the perfect high school girly car- cutest color, sunroof, etc. I thought I was so cool ;). Next, I drove a 2000 VW Jetta (turbo and red, soo cute and fast) for a couple of years until I fell in love with the 2002 VW Beetle when I was a sophomore in college and bought that. It was blue and so adorable. Then when I graduated in 2004 I bought yet another new VW Jetta in slate gray (2005 model). Sigh. Now I miss those cute cars. I also sound like a crazy person who goes through too many cars but I always liked having new ones. :)

how long did it take you to grow your hair? do you have thick hair?

My hair has been growing for awhile, and I'm even really sure when I decided to grow it long. I don't have thick hair, but I have a lot of fine hair! I have the most amazing hair stylist and friend Rhonda who is also a "big sister" to me and has been in my life and doing my hair since I was 13! She works wonders. If you live in Phoenix and want a new hair stylist, definitely let me know and I can point you in the right direction!

Did you ever feel ostracized within your sorority for the "alternative" music you listen to or for your tattoos? I know you've written positive things about the sorority experience, but it seems like you had the sort of superficial differences from them that can damage relationships when everyone is still young and silly, especially because sororities are so image conscious.

Great question! And absolutely and definitely not! Although I have to say that I didn't have tattoos when I was in college- I waited until I had graduated to get one. It's kind of odd to type this out, but outside of tattoos and some of the music I listen to, I am the silliest girly girl in the entire world, and very much a "sorority girl," all the good parts at least! ;) I also never would have joined an organization where I felt judged or made to feel bad about myself! Even now, five years later, I go back with my friends from time to time for reunions, initiations, Homecomings, etc, and I don't feel "ostracized" at all. But again, I think that if I was what people (sadly) stereotype to be a "tattooed person" to be like, it wouldn't have worked out. And I probably wouldn't have wanted to rush in the first place.

Hi Danielle! Superb blog you have here, it is FANTASTIC to see the way it is growing! Can you tell me where you got your shades from? It's the black one with the gold pieces at the sides. They are fab!

my love

Thank you so very much! :) I think you mean these ones! They are from Forever21, last summer.

what kind of hair dye do you use? how often to you go to the salon?

I don't know what kind of hair color it is. I go to the salon about every 5-6 weeks, but only trim my hair every other time.

What are your top 10 favorite blogs? Who do you admire and "look up" to?

It's so hard to just pick 10, but some of my favorite blogs are:

Sheryl
Jenna
Lauren
Holly
Elsie
Jessica
Katie
Marisa
James
Lindsay

As far as "who I look up to," I look up to my parents the most out of anyone in the whole world.

I have super sensitive skin like you. What daily body lotion do you use/recommend?

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Cetaphil body cream. I constantly get comments on how soft my skin is, and I fully thank this lotion. I put it on immediately after I exit the shower and dry off with a towel, and it totally seals in moisture. As far as more natural stuff goes, I am a big fan of anything by Kiss My Face!

Hi Danielle. I just recently found your blog and am really enjoying it. It's hard to believe you had any body image issues, you are such a beautiful person. I know we all have our own little quirks about ourselves though. Anyway, I was just wondering where your archives link is? I don't see one on here.

I added one for you right over there! Thank you so much for the suggestion! xo

Just a random question, but what kind of laptop do you and Hank have? I'm curious as I imagine you'll be using your laptop a lot for blogging etc. Are you satisfied with them and if not, do you have any other models in mind for your next purchase?

We both have Macbooks and both LOVE them. We are an Apple family and will always have brand loyalty. :)

well you know how you have the huge sometimes sweet thing as like a header, well i'm new to the blog world, and i would like to know how to do that. i kinda made up a picture but it doesn't work.

Go see Lindsay at Her Sunday Dress, she can help you out!

Hey there Danielle! I realize the time has QUITE come, but do you have any "favorite names" that are potentials? Have a beautiful day!

Hank actually picked out our future daughter's name a long, long time ago and I swore I wouldn't tell the internet world until the day came. But you can know our first boys name, since he will be a IV. hah. Henry Hampton IV that is! ;)

Hi Danielle! As a very unhealthy vegan I'm always on the look out for healthy new meals. You mentioned recently you were making a macro platter for dinner - what do you put on it? Thankyou! Much love, Sam xxx

We always have steamed veggies, brown rice, tofu, and beans!

my favorite thing at pita jungle- the macro platter

Hey! I've been reading your post about feeling a bit ill (hope you feel 100% soon!) and I'm interested in hearing about what supplements etc you take daily, and if you can recommend anywhere to learn more about them. I'm interested in taking some but have no idea where to go for advice! Thanks xo

Hi! Okay remember to check with your health care provider too. I take a few things- Trader Joe's Once Daily Prenatal (I have taken this for over a year and love it, I think it's done wonders for my skin and hair), Fisol Fish Oil Capsules, and bee pollen. This particular brand of fish oil is awesome because it's a different kind of pill that only opens once its in your intestine, where it should disperse. Because of this, you don't get the fishy burps or after taste (which is SO GROSS). If you click on the name of the product up there you can learn about its benefits. The bee pollen is kind of an odd thing, but very neat. It's a super amazing supplement that has a lot of health benefits. It's toted as a "super food" because it has all of the complete nutrition you'd need for one day. It is a veritable alphabet of vitamins, tons of trace minerals, it's a natural appetite suppressant, it contains "more protein by weight than beef," and it smells and tastes yummy. It also is a great topper on your oatmeal in the morning or even dissolved in hot water if you're not wanting to eat.

I feel really lucky that my mom is such a natural health nut because she turns my sister and I on to a lot of really awesome, new things. I love it!

Do you know what you want your next tattoo(s) to be?

Yes, but I'm not telling! ;)

You like Mondays?! Admirable. I dread Mondays - which is probably my problem. Can you tell me how you ease into Monday? Do you have a Sunday afternoon/evening routine you like to follow?

Sundays are a really special day in my family, when we're at my parents' house. It's a tradition for all of us to get up, workout together, then go to breakfast and food shopping at Trader Joe's, Sprouts, and Whole Foods. We usually make a stop at all three because my Mom likes to get items from each store as funny as it sounds. Hank and I kind of do something similar and spend the day really enjoying ourselves. We usually workout, food shop, and lay low. Sunday evening I always paint my nails, make sure every nook and cranny in our house is perfectly clean, and plan meals and workouts for the week. This really helps me feel "set" for the upcoming week. There's been a few times we've been on vacation and I've missed being able to do this, and I always feel a bit out of sorts come Monday. I would say the main thing is to just organize, organize, organize! I am an organizational freak with my day planner attached to my hip so it's a necessity for me.

Do you like sushi?

YES!

What does your voice sound like? You should post more videos.

I do post videos from time to time, but I will try and post more! Here's a short little video I made for Hank will he was on tour. There's my voice! :)

quick question tho. you have said you only wash your hair every couple days right? how do you keep it so full? do you tie it up when you sleep? if so with what. id appreciate any advice you have to give. mine always comes out flat if i sleep with it down or gross and crinkled if i wear it up.

Yes, I only wash it every 2-3 days! I use dry shampoo just on my bangs, so the rest is just normal old dirty hair, haha. I sleep with it in a big, loose bun on top of my head, so I'm sure that helps with volume! I never have kinks in my hair because I tie it very loosely with itself- I don't use a rubber band or anything. If you don't have enough hair for that yet, I would advise using an old 1980s type scrunchie to avoid the kink. :)

How do you get such great self-portraits? Do you use a tripod or set your camera on something with a timer? Or does Hank take them?

Most of the self-portraits you see are just from my Macbook actually. I just set the computer on a flat surface and snap a picture! Any "regular" photos though, like the ones from today are all Hank. He likes taking my photo and I definitely oblige. We don't have a tripod so it's either photobooth or the hubby! And thank you for the compliment!

Can you post pictures of all the framed portraits/pictures on your wall? (Maybe not all of them, but your favorites?)

I will do that this week! Thanks for the question.

So I am getting married in October and I have a few personal questions to ask you about your wedding. It looks like it was absolutely beautiful. First, who designed your dress? Next, did you have a budget or did you anything go? Lastly, is there anything you wish you would or would not have done at your wedding? Thanks!

I actually have no idea who the designer of my dress was, isn't that weird? I suppose I should find out. I got it at a wedding shop in downtown Phoenix- my friend Shirley picked it out and it was the second dress I tried on. Once I put it on I didn't really ask any questions, I was in love! To answer your next question, we were fortunate enough to be able to pretty much have whatever type of wedding we wanted, and I am thankful for that. And in terms of changes, no, I wouldn't change a thing. If I think hard about it, maybe the only thing I would have done was to have it in the fall because I love that season so much, but our timing worked out really well with my teaching schedule.

What sort of children do you hope to raise?

Hank and I talk a lot about this. We hope to raise open-minded kids who never feel judged, and always feel like they can be themselves, whoever that may be. I hope they are loving, open, creative kids who really enjoy being kids! Other than that, we don't really have a game plan. My biggest thing is just making sure they know whoever they are is a-okay with us and that we will always love them unconditionally.

Hey! Someone rightly commented on your lovely posture and I wondered if you had any tips on how to get good posture - any exercises you think help etc?

Thank you! I really attribute it to years of dance and gymnastics! I also consciously tell myself to roll my shoulders back all of the time so now its just a normal thing for me to do! I would just say to consistently remind yourself to sit and stand up straight. Pretty soon it will become second nature.

How much of your body are you willing to cover with tat'?

Thanks! :) I would like to have a lot more actually, other arm, other side, both sides of neck, other thigh. Fun! ;)

I noticed on your twitter this week that you mentioned finishing up your family budget. Have any tips for making & maintaining a budget? What about tips from your own experiences, for couples about to combine their finances? Thanks!

I only recently started doing this, so I don't have much advice, but once a couple months have passed I will make a post about this.

Has a student ever had a crush on you?

I don't know, nor do I want to know. :)

how do you know elsie?

I met Elsie through blogging! She's been a great source of inspiration for me, and I adore her.

hi there! I absolutely adore your blog! I am a quite heavily tattooed 21 year old girly and am consdering working towards a teaching credential. Now to my question! When people would ask you about what profession you were considering, did you ever get negative feed back for your tattoos from family/ friends etc? Because i seem to be be very discouraged when it comes to furthering my education goals towards teaching. Thanks so much!

People are always going to have something negative to say unfortunately. As far as your profession though, tattoos have nothing to do with it. You can cover with clothes and no one would ever know! Many people at work don't even know I have tattoos, and it's not an issue at all and has never been one. You'd also be surprised to know how many other teachers have tattoos under those professional clothes. Tell the naysayers that some ink in your skin has absolutely nothing to do with your profession- it's silly for them to even think that. And as time goes by and tattoos become even more mainstream, it will be even less of a potential issue.

After I read the story of how you and Hank met, I was just wondering, do you think if two people meet and they don't get the same feeling that you both had, then are they still meant to be together? Or do you think that all people who are meant to be together will get that feeling? I hope that's not too confusing :D

Absolutely not! I think our story is pretty uncommon. For instance, my sister and her fiance have known each other and been friends throughout junior high and high school. They didn't start dating until they were in college. It happens differently for everyone, and I think it happens in just the right way for each couple!

Buying organic, do you have to go grocery shopping a lot more often in order to have fresh food at home?

We go food shopping about 2x a week. We almost always go on Sundays, and usually I will go again on my own around Wednesday or Thursday for produce. I really enjoy grocery shopping so I don't mind going, and this way we never really waste food since we never buy more than a couple days worth of stuff.

What is your favorite meal to cook?

Lately I've been making this meal every week! I love it :).

Alright, so that's it for this week! Thanks for all the questions and so many AMAZING, thoughtful, sweet, encouraging comments over there. Continue to ask me/tell me whatever your heart desires. Until next Sunday...

Thanks guys!
xoxo
